Gloucestershire County Council has decided to approve the proposal to close Withington Church of England Primary School following the statutory consultation process, after careful consideration of all views and representations received. We recognise that many members of the school and wider community will be disappointed by this outcome.
This decision was not taken lightly. However, significant challenges relating to pupil numbers, staffing and the long-term sustainability of the school meant that closure was considered the only viable option.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to the consultation and to acknowledge the dedication and commitment shown by staff, governors and families over many years. Our priority now is to support the remaining pupils, families and staff through the transition and to ensure appropriate arrangements are in place for those affected.
Ron Storey, Chair of Governors, said, "On behalf of the Governing Board, I would like to thank all the pupils, their families and all members of staff who have been involved in supporting the school, which has served its community successfully. We now want to focus on celebrating this and achieving a dignified and respectful closure.”
The school will close on Monday 31st August 2026.
Jane Borgeaud, Diocesan Director of Education, said: 'Withington has been a valued church school, serving its community for many decades. We hold the families, pupils, staff and community in our prayers at this time of transition and remain deeply thankful for the service given by staff, governors, volunteers and the local church."
