Read the recent urgent improvement judgements and a pattern starts to appear. Leadership and governance.
The problem is not always confined to what happened in one room. The finding can point back to what leaders knew, checked and acted on.
We’ve turned those patterns into a self-check for group leaders.
Comment/dm “September” and I’ll send it.
Here is how all these separate changes connect.
Safer sleep, screen use, dog breeds, devices. They can feel like a list of unrelated items. But to an inspector they are all signs of the same thing: a setting that notices what matters, has clear expectations, and can show them in practice.
With safeguarding judged Met or Not Met, and welfare more visible in everyday inspection, the individual rules are not really the point. The point is whether your setting runs on clear, evidenced practice.
Get that right and the specific changes slot into it neatly.

A gentle reminder in the middle of all this change.
You are not expected to rebuild everything.
Most of the revised EYFS strengthens and clarifies what good settings already do. Safer sleep is being made explicit, not invented. Recruitment checks are tightened, not started from scratch. The screen guidance formalises instincts most practitioners already have.
The work is targeted: know what applies to you, update the specific policies that need it, brief your team, and be able to show it. That is the whole job.
Which area do you already feel confident is fully in place?

An ordinary photograph of a three-year-old hasn’t changed.
What can be done with it has.
AI, updated safeguarding guidance and recent data breaches mean early years settings need to look again at how photographs of children are taken, stored and shared.
In this week’s video, I look at what has changed and four practical things settings can do now.
“We’ve always done it this way” probably isn’t enough anymore

What happens when a team member feels safe enough to raise a concern? This is a real story from a setting that got it right.
In this video, I share how one nursery handled a whistleblowing incident - from the moment a staff member raised a concern about a colleague's tone, to the supportive response that followed. You'll see why having a clear, confidential route for staff to speak up matters so much, especially in settings where everything is visible.
f you lead a setting, this is worth watching. Your team's ability to raise concerns safely isn't just good practice - it's how you protect children and support staff.
What's your experience? Do your team feel able to speak up?
