LEWIS EXPLAINS HIS STORY OF ENTERING THE CHILDCARE INDUSTRY !!
I came to Qualitas Training Academy after leaving school to complete an Employability Fund course in relation to working in childcare. I worked hard to successfully complete a Stage 2 Employability Award. Due to my diligence and hard work Qualitas then offered me a great opportunity to complete a Pathway Apprenticeship in Social Services Children and Young People.
This involved completing a work based challenge unit alongside relevant childcare units. The pathways apprenticeship gave me my first opportunity to work with children in a professional setting. This gave me a chance to grow in confidence and offered me the opportunity to work in and experience different settings providing me with the resources and skills that I needed to further my understanding of children and young people.
I enjoyed the nursery experience especially being a male role model for the kids. Completing the Pathway Apprenticeship proved to be a great stepping stone as I found out how to complete written pieces of work, use referencing skills and use an online portfolio.
On completion of the Pathway Apprenticeship award I was offered a full time Modern Apprenticeship (Social Services Children and Young People Level 3) within a local nursery (Bothwell Montessori) and I am continuing my hard work with the support of the nursery staff as well as my Qualitas assessor Paula Glancy.
I cannot believe that within 15 months I have completed 2 Skills Development Scotland funded courses and I am on track to complete my Modern Apprenticeship before the end of 2022.
OWEN'S STORY OF WORKING IN CHILDCARE
Initially I had no idea what I was going to pursue then I came across the opportunity for a Pathways Apprenticeship in Childcare with Qualitas. The course details and offer of a placement had me keen to enrol. So far it has been one of the best experiences of my life and when I'm there it doesn't just feel like a "job" its enjoyable, interesting and I want to pursue this for my future.
I have gained experience and knowledge in childcare since starting my placement in the nursery. Developed greater understandings (and respect) of the importance of childcare and the many factors that come into place. I have had opportunities to facilitate experiences with the children, activities such as painting, crafts, sensory, physical and social. I have been learning basic sign language to better communicate with the children with hearing difficulties or children with ASN.
During placement I formed many relationships with the children, colleagues and parents and I am able to be responsive and inclusive to all children’s need and interests. I became more organised. I learned to work both independently and as part of a team. I was given a mentor in this placement who has given me a lot of advice and tips and gave me an overall better knowledge of childcare and the workplace.
As according to my mentor and manager I've integrated well and become an asset to the team and they have offered to be my references when applying for jobs as I'm very highly thought of within the nursery by not only my colleagues but the children as well.
I was delighted to secure a Modern Apprenticeship in The Barnehage Nursery and Out of School Care and I am very much enjoying this experience. I am working hard with the support of the nursery and my assessor Michelle from Qualitas. I can see myself progressing from this stage in the future, gaining more knowledge and experiences hopefully working towards being an Early Years Practitioner or eventually being a manager and running my own nursery.
