Prep 1 had a fantastic day at Castle Rising yesterday. Firstly, they explored the earthworks and took in the sights of Castle Rising village and the majestic castle itself.
Whilst there, the children discussed the castle's defenses and its impressive moat.

They then explored the remains of the church, learning that it was once covered during the castle's construction and checked out the remains of the stone buildings, which once belonged to Isabella, the widow of Edward II.

After soaking up some sunshine, the children took an informative tour of the castle, delving into its rich history and architecture before departing on the bus back to school.

We would like to congratulate 3rd Form pupils Nathanael W (Academic Scholar) and Mia G (Art Scholar) who have won prizes at the 2024 Young Arts Open Competition which took place on Saturday 30 March at the Wisbech & Fenland Museum. The exhibition featured artworks by 78 candidates aged 4 to 24.

Mia's drawing 'Baby Me', won 'Highly Commended' in her age category (12-15 years) and the 'Blackfield Creatives Judges' Special Award. The Judges were "dazzled and impressed" by Mia's portrayal of herself and commented that it was "an admirable and brave approach for a 13 year-old to tackle drawing a self-portrait, one of the most difficult tasks for an artist."

They further remarked on the intimate vulnerability, candid eyes and the perfect imperfections, considering them an act of courage. The Judges appreciated Mia's spark and open-hearted vision, qualities few young artists have the courage to display to the public - "the simplicity and innocence, as attributes of childhood, are something we shouldn't lose along the way."

Nathanael's linocut won first prize in his age category and was originally commissioned for a family friend of their dog 'Sonic'. Nathanael sculpted his piece by using a head and shoulder photo of Sonic, drawing inspiration from an image of an Irish Wolfhound on its hind legs to capture the shape of a dog running. The judges commented on the day that they "could have sold Nathanael's print several times over!"

Congratulations to Mia and Nathanael on their fantastic achievements.

WGSโ€™ Kindergarten and Reception classes had a wonderful time when their science lessons encompassed a visit to Hamerton Zoo last week.

Upon arrival, the children immediately saw some of the most amazing animals from all over the world. Their adventure continued on a train ride, time travelling to prehistoric times to see the enormous dinosaurs! They were also lucky enough to see beautiful cheetahs and wolves close up from the train.

After a spot of lunch, the children played in the adventure playground and then went to visit the BIG animals.

The camels were just enormous, and the children were thrilled when the white tiger came right to the fence to meet them. They also learned that bears do like to snack on apples, not just marmalade sandwiches!

All the children enjoyed a wonderful day at the zoo!

This weekend, a team of eight 6th Form pupils joined the annual Student Robotics competition at the University of Southampton. The team faced 24 other teams from across the UK and Europe. Their robot, named "Ok_Pancakes", kicked off strongly, however, encountered issues with the lifting arm later in the afternoon.

Undeterred, the team rallied on and diligently rectified the problems. Their efforts paid off, clinching 2nd place in the league, propelling them straight through to the quarter-finals of the knockout stage. With two more solid performances, they advanced to the final showdown, facing formidable opponents and former winners from Munich, London and Guernsey.

Following an intense battle and a daring strategy, victory narrowly slipped from their grasp at the final buzzer. They secured second place after Germany. The team also marked WGS's best ever performance since entering the competition. Mr Cole and Mr Dunlop, who lead the Robotics Club are extremely proud of their team! Well done to all, what an incredible achievement!

We need YOUR help!

An Old Grammarian found out in July 2022 that her son had Acute Myeloid Leukemia and needed a stem cell donation to save his life. Her family are now on a mission to get more people signed up to the global stem cell register to help save the lives of others. One day, someone you know may also need a stem cell donation.

WGS have teamed up with blood cancer charity DKMS UK to run a donor registration event, to encourage more potential lifesavers to join the stem cell register.

All it takes is five minutes of your time and three simple cheek swabs, so please come down and register. Once you are on the stem cell register, youโ€™ll be a lifesaver-in-waiting for someone in need of a stem cell transplant.

Please share this post and join us!
When? Saturday 20th April, 08.30-13.00
Where? Wisbech Grammar School, Sports Hall

DKMS strives to find a matching donor for every patient in need. To find out more about the Charity and how a stem cell donation works please follow the attached link - dkms.org.uk

Friday, 15 March, stood out as a great day for our rugby programme.

Our U12 7s team participated in a tournament hosted by Leicester Grammar School. WGS dominated their pool group and advanced to face a very strong Stamford team in the finals. It was an amazing day where the pupils gave their all. Well done to all involved for an outstanding performance.

Later that day, the 1st XV and U15s joined the U12s at the Northampton Saints where they all had a great day. They were invited onto the pitch before the match to hold the team's 'big shirt' and were presented during the halftime with a signed Saints shirt.

A big thank you to all participating pupils for a fantastic day.

Our 4th to 6th Form pupils started the Easter break with an unforgettable adventure, exploring the vibrant city of Madrid!

The days were filled with discovery and wonder when visiting several of the many Historic Landmarks Madrid has to offer, such as The Museo del Prado and the Palacio Real.

Leisurely strolls through Madridโ€™s bustling streets and the El Retiro park, a must have flamenco evening and a morning spent at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, home to Real Madrid, made this a trip to remember!

A huge thank you to our pupils for their impeccable behaviour and to Mr Rodriguez, Miss Gomm, Mrs Skinner and Mrs Williams for organising and making this trip an unforgettable experience!
