Ferry Project Helping the homeless with love and support towards independence since 1998 On entry to Ferry Project, individuals are assigned a key worker.

Established in 1998, Ferry project is an award winning social enterprise and registered charity that helps homeless people in fenland. The aim of the ferry project is not simply to provide accommodation, but to give people the skills they need to enable them to live independently. These include life skills such as cooking and cleaning, education courses, vocational training, volunteering and employment opportunities. We currently provide up to fifty bed spaces in Wisbech and engage with over three hundred clients per year. We are the largest provider for homelessness-related issues in the district, engaging with an estimated eighty percent of those who find themselves homeless in Fenland. "Ferry Project provides a short-term interaction in an individual’s life when they have an immediate need. Once we carry them to their destination, they move on.”
Keith Smith, Founder & Director of Ferry Project

Our clients include people with financial problems, people fleeing domestic violence, people recovering from a family breakdown or from drug and alcohol abuse, young people leaving the care system, those who have been sexually abused, ex-offenders and those with simply nowhere else to go. The key worker will work with the individual client to assess that person’s need and create an individual support plan with self-determined goals. These goals may include referrals to partner agencies, and getting back in touch with family and friends. Counselling and basic skills training are performed at the project’s headquarters, Octavia View, with additional educational courses provided at the Queen Mary Centre in Wisbech.

🏆 The Ferry Project has won 'Homelessness Project of the Year' at the national Housing Executive Awards! 🏆

We are absolutely thrilled to announce our victory at this year's awards, held on Tuesday 6th October 2026 at the Bolton Wanderers Football Stadium. Hosted by Greatest Hits Radio's Andy Crane, these awards celebrate the dedication of those going above and beyond in the social housing sector.

Our CEO, Sandra Ferreira, proudly represented us as finalists in two major categories:

• Partnership of the Year – Celebrating our innovative work with local arts group Blackfield Creatives, embedding creativity into everyday support to break down barriers to culture, inclusion, and wellbeing.

• Homelessness Project of the Year – Up against fantastic organisations like Gloucester City Homes, Rady4Home, Telford & Wrekin Council, Walsall Council, and YMCA Cheshire, The Ferry Project claimed the ultimate victory! The award was presented by Nick Fellows, Managing Director of the Housing Executive.

Reflecting on the win, our CEO Sandra Ferreira said:
"Winning the Homelessness Project of the Year Award is a proud recognition of the commitment, compassion and innovation shown by our staff, volunteers, trustees, partners and residents. This achievement reflects the positive outcomes being delivered every day and our shared belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to rebuild their lives, achieve independence and thrive within their community."

As Harry Palmer, Editor of Housing Executive magazine, beautifully put it: a stable, affordable home is not a luxury, but a human right and the bedrock to a healthy, fulfilled life.

A massive thank you to our incredible team, our partners, and our community for making this possible!

Help us make a house a home. Ferry Project has teamed up with The King's Church Wisbech to run Wisbech Donations Hub - We supply those in need in our community with essential household items such as furniture, bedding, rugs, cutlery, microwaves etc.

So often people are moved into accommodation that is completely empty, and they have nothing and no ability to purchase everything they need. Wisbech Donations Hub not only helps with tenancy sustainment, but also helps to cater for the basic needs of setting up a home - helping people to live with dignity and a sense of worth, as well as helping to reduce anxiety and stress.

And YOU can help. If you have essential household items that are in good working order, please donate them to Wisbech Donations Hub and we will give them to someone in need in our community who has been referred to us by an official referral agency.

Thank you.

Saturday 10th October was World Homelessness Day. We marked the day by holding a small Vigil of solidarity and hope on the plaza of Octavia View, the main hostel and base of operations for the Ferry Project.

We took some time to remember those whom we had lost due to homelessness and observed a minute's silence, and lit a candle for them.

We then wrote hopes, prayers, dreams and words of encouragement that we then tied to the railings, as an act of encouragement and solidarity.

We listened to some music that focused on hope and overcoming adversity for those who were still in the midst of their homelessness journeys.

A poem was read. Clive Butcher, from The King's Church in Wisbech, who himself had experienced homelessness, said a few words and a prayer.

We wish to thank everyone who came and supported the vigil. We hope it was a meaningful time of reflection, and we know the clients whom we work with, even if they may not have attended, have had time to read the words left behind. Thank you for your support.

Got unwanted furniture or working appliances in good condition?

Before you look to throw them away, let’s give them a second life!

Here is how simple it is to support the Wisbech Donations Hub:

1️⃣ Check Your Items: Ensure your furniture is clean and has intact safety fire tags, and that your electricals are in full working order.

2️⃣ Reach Out: Send us an email at [email protected] with details (and photos!) of what you have.

3️⃣ Impact Lives: We partner with local agencies (like the Wisbech Social Prescribing Team) who refer community members in crisis.

Your items go directly into local homes to reduce anxiety and restore dignity.

Double-check our exact item criteria and opening times on the King's Church Donations Hub Page.

We're currently recruiting for an exciting role — could this be for you?

Ferry Project is an award-winning charity and social enterprise based in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire — and the largest provider of homelessness services in Fenland, supporting around 80% of people who find themselves without a home locally. We don't just provide a roof: we walk alongside people through crisis, recovery, and into truly independent lives. Over 25 years we've supported more than 3,500 people, and every day our team of 40+ dedicated staff makes a real, lasting difference to some of the most vulnerable people in our community.

Keyworker: Complex Needs & Health - Support people experiencing homelessness with complex needs — including mental health challenges, trauma and substance misuse — helping them rebuild their lives and move toward independence. You'll need strong communication skills, experience working with vulnerable adults, a full driving licence and an enhanced DBS.

If this role sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you. Visit our website for full details and how to apply: https://www.ferryproject.org.uk/job-vacancies
