Before any teacher attempts to answer the question "What makes a good teacher?", they should look at students' perspective.
Watch this video and notice the extent to which students stressed the importance of being seen as individuals, which according to them requires teachers to both allow students to be themselves in the classroom, and hence unfold their personality, and to invest time in getting to know them.
Students also want to be inspired, have fun, not to be yelled at, connect the lesson to why they need it, be seen as teachers’ actual kids, have teachers share stories of their life and feel safe that teachers will be there to guide them if they are struggling with something.
What teachers should always remember then, is that all students, just like all humans, have the need to be valued, respected, accepted and seen as who they are independently of their cultural and social background. This is the basis for setting a safe environment in the classroom, which in turn will allow learning to occur.
Teachers like all true leaders teachers should guide the ones working with them to success by ensuring they will all perform at their best.
Have a good academic year!
