*** Sharing from the Council for Disabled Children ***

As part of their Programme Development Grant (PDG) work, the Council for Disabled Children is gathering feedback to better understand services for children and young people with neurodevelopmental and neurological conditions, including SEND.

They are inviting parent carers and professionals who support children and young people with SEND to take part in a short survey.

🕒 Each survey takes around 20 minutes to complete, and your views will help shape future services and support.

💬 If you’re a parent carer or work with young people with SEND, please consider taking part:

This Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June), we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers who give up their time to support vital services across Hampshire.

This includes Andre and Kaia who volunteer with children and families who need a little extra support.

Andre is one of our Community Buddies who help children and young people with a disability, additional or special educational needs to get out and about in the community. He says: “I volunteer because I want to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life, and supporting my buddy has shown me exactly how powerful that can be. Seeing his transformation – from a shy, anxious boy to someone confident, active, and socially engaged – has been incredibly rewarding.”

As an Independent Visitor, Kaia is a trusted adult to a young person in care. She says: “Volunteering as an Independent Visitor for the past three years has shown me how valuable simply giving your time can be. [It] has taught me that consistency, connection and simply being there for someone can make a real difference.”

If you’re interested in joining our inspiring community of Children and Families volunteers, you can learn more about the different opportunities available in an online information session this Wednesday (3 June) at 6.30pm.

A very important court case has recently been decided. It gives stronger rights to children with special educational needs (SEND) and their parents and carers.

Here’s what it means:

Your Local Authority should not stop or change an EHCP without:

🔸talking to the parents and carers
🔸talking to the child
🔸talking to the school

Children keep their EHCP even if they are away for a long time.
A child is still the council’s responsibility if they are 'normally' living in that area — even if they are away for months or years.

This helps:

🔹military families
🔹foster children
🔹children with separated parents
🔹children staying away from home temporarily

The Local Authority can “pause” a plan — but cannot just remove it.
If a child is away, the LA must either make sure there is other support in place, or update the plan.

AVideo for Parent Carers!

With National Offer Day last month and the summer term just around the corner, we’ve recorded a new, shorter, and easy‑to‑follow video to support a smoother transition for young people moving up to secondary school while on SEN Support.

Whether your child is in Year 5 or Year 6, this quick guide walks you through what to expect, how the transition planning process works, and what to start considering ahead of Year 7 — helping you feel more prepared for the months ahead.
