Woodland Adventure 🌳

This week we headed out on an exciting woodland adventure with a very special mission… to collect natural treasures for our very own Granny Gruffalo’s stew! 🥣

Working together in small groups, the children explored the woodland, carefully searching for interesting natural treasures. They used their senses to investigate their surroundings and were encouraged to talk about what they could see, hear and feel.

Along the way, we discovered something magical… tiny water droplets resting on the leaves! 💧🌿 The children were fascinated as they looked closely, sharing their observations and wondering how the droplets had got there. Their curiosity led to lots of lovely conversations and new vocabulary.

Our woodland adventure supported

Oat Biscuits! 🍪

Last week in Cooking Club, we had lots of fun making some super yummy oat biscuits!

We began our session by listening to the story of 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. We talked about how Goldilocks ate the bears’ porridge and discovered that porridge is made from oats. 🐻🥣

We then thought carefully about the ingredients we would need to make out oat biscuits and discussed which ingredients we should use first. The children learned that we needed to weigh and measure our ingredients before adding them to the bowl. 👩‍🍳

Working together, we measured our ingredients, mixed everything together and explored the texture and consistency of our biscuit mixture. We used lots of descriptive language to talk about how the mixture felt and looked as it changed.

Learning opportunities included:

✨Mathematics – developing an understanding of measuring, quantities and numbers as we weighed our ingredients.
✨Communication & Language – listening to a story, following instructions, introducing new vocabulary and talking about textures and ingredients.
✨Personal, Social & Emotional Development – working cooperatively, taking turns, sharing resources and developing confidence in trying something new.
✨Physical Development – strengthening fine motor skills through pouring, scooping, mixing and handling ingredients.
✨Understanding the World – learning where food comes from, exploring ingredients and making links between the story and our real-life cooking experience.
✨Expressive Arts & Design – exploring different textures and ingredients

🐛🐸 Wiggly Worms & Little Tadpoles! 🐸🐛

This week the children had lots of fun creating their own wiggly worms and little tadpoles!

Our creations sparked wonderful conversations about life cycles. We talked about all sorts of bugs and animals and discovered how creatures grow and change in different ways. We explored words such as froglets, larvae and pupae, and thought about how different creatures grow and change in such amazing ways. 🦋🐸

This hands-on activity supported lots of important EYFS learning, including:

✨ Understanding the World – developing knowledge of living things, growth and life cycles, while encouraging curiosity about the natural world.
✨ Communication and Language – introducing new vocabulary such as larvae, pupae, tadpole and froglet, while encouraging the children to share their ideas and ask questions.
✨ Physical Development – strengthening fine motor skills through rolling, squeezing, pinching and moulding the Play-Doh.
✨ Expressive Arts and Design – using imagination and creativity to make their own creatures and explore ideas through open-ended play.
✨ Personal, Social and Emotional Development – building confidence as children shared their thoughts, listened to others and enjoyed learning together.

It was fantastic to see the children sharing their ideas, asking questions and using their imaginations while learning about the amazing world around them. 💚

🔨✨ Tap-a-Shape Fun! ✨🔨

The children had lots of fun getting creative with our “Tap-a-Shape” activity! 🧡

They carefully placed the pins into the shapes before using their hammers to gently tap them into place. This hands-on activity was a fantastic way to develop their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, patience and perseverance, concentration and control. 🌟

The activity also encouraged problem-solving, spatial awareness and early mathematical skills as the children explored different shapes, patterns, positions and sizes. 🔺🟨🟢🔷

Most importantly, the children loved exploring their creativity and proudly creating their own colourful designs! 🎨

🌿 Learning Through Movement! ☀️

Today the children have been developing their gross motor skills whilst enjoying the beautiful autumn sunshine! 🍂

They have been loving practising their coordination and balance as they explore the garden. From carefully balancing, stepping and climbing to navigating different spaces, the children are developing their physical control, confidence and body awareness while having lots of fun!

We love seeing the children challenge themselves, encourage one another and celebrate their own achievements. 💛

These experiences help children to develop:
✨ Balance and coordination�
✨ Core strength and physical control
✨ Spatial awareness�
✨ Confidence and independence�
✨ Body awareness and movement skills�
✨ Concentration, listening and following instructions�
✨ Resilience and perseverance

Through active, playful experiences, children are learning how their bodies work, developing increasing control and coordination, and discovering what they are capable of.

These experiences support the Early Years Foundation Stage Physical Development area and reflect the principles of Development Matters, where children are encouraged to develop their gross motor skills through opportunities to move, explore and challenge themselves.

And, of course, they’re having lots of fun along the way! 🌟🍂

Wiggly worms 🪱

In science club, we made “wiggly worms grow.” First, we wrapped toilet paper around a pencil and then squashed the paper down to make a little worm shapes.

Next, we put our worms into a tray. We carefully used our pipetts to drop some blue water onto the worms and watched what happened.

It was so exciting to see the worms grow and become bigger! This was a fun experiment that helped us observe how the paper changed when it absorbed the water.

Overall, the activity provided a fun, hands-on way for children to develop their curiosity, observation skills, communication and language, fine motor control, early scientific thinking and problem-solving skills.

This activity also supported the three characteristics of effective teaching and learning:

🪱 Playing and Exploring: Children investigated the materials and explored what would happen when water was added.

🪱 Active Learning: Children remained engaged as they watched their worms change and experienced the satisfaction of seeing their ideas come to life.

🪱 Creating and Thinking Critically: Children made predictions, observed changes and thought about why the worms grew and changed shape.

A very warm welcome to all our new children and families, and welcome back to our existing families! We have had a very busy and exciting week getting to know one another, building relationships and helping the children feel happy, safe and settled in their new environment.

Throughout the week, we have been focusing on getting to know each child as an individual, supporting their interests, developing friendships and encouraging confidence and independence.

We look forward to continuing to build strong relationships with our children and families and sharing their learning and achievements with you throughout the year.

All ready for our graduation party today!

Today we had the exciting opportunity to observe one of nature's most amazing transformations as our chrysalises emerged into beautiful butterflies! 🦋

The children watched with great excitement as one by one the butterflies came out of their chrysalises. At first, their wings were soft and folded, but over the day they expanded, dried, and became strong enough for flight. This was a wonderful real-life demonstration of the final stage of the butterfly life cycle and gave the children a chance to see metamorphosis happen right before their eyes.

It was a memorable learning experience that sparked lots of curiosity, thoughtful questions, and excitement. We are so proud of how carefully and respectfully the children observed and cared for our butterflies throughout this journey. 🦋💛
