📚️ Today we celebrated National Poetry Day with an online event attended by pupils from schools on the EmpathyLab Schools Programme.

Award-wining poets Dean Atta and Coral Rumble shared their own poems inspired by the National Poetry Day theme of wonder, and we were thrilled to share poems written by students themselves, including this one by Amelia at Carrick Academy.

We think it's a stunning piece reminding us that human connection - empathy - sits at the heart of all that is wonder-ful about our world. Massive thanks to all involved in this event for making it such a special celebration of the power of poetry to bring us together.

We run sessions like this for the 100+ schools on our programme each term, and we'd love your school to get involved. Our next Schools Programme training starts on 22 October, find out more and join us, so you can activate reading to build real life empathy across our whole school community.

🥳 Happy National Poetry Day! How are you celebrating?
We’re looking forward to our event with EmpathyLab Schools tomorrow, joined by Dean Atta and Coral Rumble, where we'll be sharing poems written by students, as well as doing some writing in the moment.

This year’s theme is Wonder – celebrating the power of poetry to spark curiosity, encourage creativity and help young minds wonder at the world around them. A perfect way to build empathy too!

Anyone who registers can access a wonderful collection of FREE, ready-to-teach resources for ages 3–16+ - plus there’s a live poetry lesson with Michael Rosen and Hot Poets.

We activate reading to build real life empathy. Our Schools Programme supports you to embed this approach across your curriculum, whole school culture, and within your community.

It costs just £500 to join the programme and train key staff to use empathy-focused book talk and creative reading approaches confidently in the classroom. But this is far more than training, you’ll get a year of access to a whole school programme, with:
✏️ A wealth of classroom activities, resources and author events
💭 All the training materials needed to cascade the approach across your staff team
🫂 Our support to help you plan, implement and measure as you embed the approach in your setting

With our help you can turn diverse, relatable stories into a practical empathy-building practice that help every child feel seen, valued, and connected.
