thank you to all those who have spoken, attended or supported Progressive Property Network Manchester in 2025. We’ve had 12 great meetings – one each and every month - with a huge variety of topics and speakers.

We’ve enjoyed great energy, networking (and follow-ups!), education, knowledge and insights, and lots of fun doing it - including even more late night networking in the bar afterwards. And I love hosting and helping everyone I can to thrive and succeed. So thank you all!

Feeling grateful. Thinking about my dad and mam.

It’s my dad’s birthday today and if he was still with us, he would be 105 (born 1919).

He grew up in Manchester in the 20s and 30s and worked as a docker for the Co-op unloading huge ships of grain.

Then he ended up fighting from 1939-1946, first against the fascists in Italy (including the terrible battle of Monte Cassino) then against the communists in the Greek civil war.

After the war he and my mam lived in Ardwick, East Manchester, then Wythenshawe, a garden city, then in Cheshire.

We got to live in a new council house with gardens front and back and we had a new health centre and I went to a newly built school. Gosh, were we lucky.

Yes, we had nowt, but somehow my dad and mam managed to bring us all up and keep us on the straight and narrow, working several jobs at once. It wasn’t all sweetness and light but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Somehow, they even managed to get us a week’s holiday most years in a caravan in Blackpool and I was in heaven then. I can still remember the rain on the caravan roof, the smell of the calor gas lights, and the illuminations. And we even had fish and chips. Wow, how things have changed.

So, wherever you are dad and mam, here’s to you and the wonderful start you gave us. Something money could never buy.

Opportunities for all

There has been a lot of reaction this week to an event being held in the property investment industry where all the speakers seem to be white middle-aged men. This has rightly been ‘called out’ on social media by a lot of people such as Rochelle Louise Gilburn and it’s important that men speak up about this too. And many have done so.

It’s important that we ensure opportunities are available for everyone for two main reasons:

First, it’s the right thing to do and it reflects the fact that we’re in the 2020s and not the 1970s.

Second, it makes business sense to maximise the talents of all of us.

And this applies not just to men and women but also to ethnicity and all the other wonderful characteristics that make us all unique.

Years ago (in 2005, not sure where that time went) I led the team that produced the first review of support for women’s enterprise in England for Prowess, an organisation that provides support for women in business. The original report is no longer available (although I have it – if anyone would like a copy let me know).

This report was then updated regularly by Dr. Rebecca Harding and her team.

The data are important as they show that we are moving in the right direction, but it still seems we have a lot more to do. The research is conclusive – diversity and inclusion provides strength and better results for us all.

So for the men out there who are acting as supporters and advocates (and there are plenty), great job and keep going. For the men who have yet to ‘get it’, you need to have a proper chat with yourselves and give it some thought.

And for the women who have called this out. Thank you and keep doing it. We will get there.
