St Bede’s RCP School returned today. Year six, back for their seventh year in a row, had an active day learning about Victorian Britain, Sherlock Holmes and managing fire.

During the afternoon several fantastic dens were built as others pond dipped, played games and relaxed in the autumnal sunshine.

Frizington Nursery School & Pre-School joined us today to support their learning about the environment.

They're using the book Tidy, about a Badger called Pete, who loves everything to be neat!

We had lots of fun with Pete the badger, looking for items that didn't belong in a woodland.

The children learned to safely toast marshmallows with lots of adult help.

We explored, painted, pretended, pond dipped and much more. What an active day!

The children from Cleator Moor Nursery School had a wonderful time with us on Thursday. Within no time at all they were confidently moving around the woodland and loved finding fairy doors in Fairy Lane as well as the hidden gruffalo animals.

The children learned how to safely toast marshmallows with adults supporting them.

They learned which animals hibernate and made cosy leaf nests for hedgehogs to hibernate on.

What a fantastic day!

To end our week, Year 3 from Richmond Hill School joined us to support them with their Stone age topic.

What a busy morning they had learning about historical evidence, Mesolithic homes, hunting and gathering and making fire, not to mention lots of games of hide & seek!

During the afternoon some chose to make dens whilst others pond dipped, explored Fairy Lane or used a bow and arrow to hunt a wooly mammoth!

Today it was finally year six's turn to visit us from St. Mary's Catholic Primary School.

Although they didn't have the benefit of following our mapping unit in earlier years they certainly made up for it in enthusiasm and by the end of the day were recognising what the symbols on our maps meant and gained accuracy in reading 6 figure grid references. They even learned about the importance of reading contour lines when out walking in the Lake District.

The children's manners were truly outstanding. Thank you for a great week St. Mary's.

It was year five's turn to complete their map-focussed session today when St. Mary's Catholic Primary school children joined us.

They made fantastic progress throughout the day and left with the ability to read 6 figure grid references.

Year 4 from St. Mary's Catholic Primary School enjoyed their day focused on maps.

They managed to work out what the symbols on our Stocks Wood map meant and used compass directions to move around the woodland.

In the afternoon they used 4 figure grid references to locate objects in the woodland. What a busy day, completed with celebratory marshmallows!
