HELP SHAPE THE FUTURE OF HOME EDUCATION IN WIGAN.

At Active Futures Foundation, we’re exploring the possibility of developing a fully resourced Home Education Hub, but we don’t want to decide what that looks like on our own.

We want to hear from the people who know home education best – parents, carers and young people themselves.

That’s why we’re creating a Home Education Working Party to help shape future opportunities and explore what support is really needed within our local community.

📅 First Working Party Meeting
🕖 Thursday 2nd July – 7:00pm
📍 Active Futures Foundation CIC, Longshoot Close, Scholes, Wigan, WN1 3NH

Whether you’ve been home educating for years, are relatively new to the journey, or simply want to help shape something positive for local families, we’d love to hear from you.

This isn’t about selling a programme.

It’s about listening, learning and building something together.

☕ From Idea to Impact ☕

This week, our young people at Active Futures Academy took ownership of a project from start to finish as they planned, organised and delivered our first Community Coffee Morning.

What started as an idea quickly became a real-world learning opportunity.

✅ Planning the event
✅ Creating shopping lists and managing a budget
✅ Shopping for ingredients and supplies
✅ Baking cakes, cookies and scones
✅ Preparing and setting up the venue
✅ Delivering invitations to local organisations and residents
✅ Welcoming guests and serving refreshments

Along the way, our young people developed skills in communication, teamwork, problem solving, organisation, maths, independence and confidence.

The best part? Seeing members of our local community come together for a brew, a chat and plenty of homemade treats.

We’re incredibly proud of the effort, commitment and pride shown by our young people throughout the whole process.

Thanks to the generosity of everyone who attended, the event raised an amazing £105 for charity. 👏

The impact didn’t stop there. Any surplus cakes and bakes were delivered by our young people to local residents and to the wonderful staff at Longshoot Health Centre, helping us spread a little more kindness throughout the community.

A special thank you also goes to Julie Murphy, Tesco Wigan Community Champion, for supporting the project by providing ingredients for our baking activities. Your generosity helped make the event possible and gave our young people the opportunity to learn, create and give back to their community.

At Active Futures Academy, we believe learning should be meaningful, purposeful and connected to the real world. This project was a perfect example of that in action. Developing skills, building confidence, strengthening community connections and making a positive difference to others.

Thank you to everyone who attended, supported the event and helped make it such a success.

Pathways. Purpose. Preparation.

This Week at Active Futures Academy 💙

Another fantastic week at Active Futures Academy, filled with learning, achievement, personal growth and plenty of meaningful conversations.

This week our young people have been developing practical sewing skills, researching and planning recipes, exploring strategy and problem-solving through games, taking part in fitness and gym-based activities, learning new skills through padel, contributing to the upkeep of our site and continuing to build confidence through a range of personalised learning opportunities.

But what these photos don’t show are the moments in between.

The conversations over a brew. The discussions about hopes, goals and future plans. The opportunities to reflect, problem-solve, build relationships and develop the confidence to believe in themselves again.

These moments are often where the real learning happens.

We’re also incredibly proud that our young people have been helping to plan and prepare for our upcoming Community Coffee Morning, where we’ll be welcoming local residents, members of the church community and neighbours into our space. From researching recipes and planning refreshments to thinking about how to make visitors feel welcome, it’s been a brilliant opportunity to develop teamwork, communication and community spirit.

At Active Futures Academy, education is about much more than qualifications. It’s about building confidence, developing life skills, creating connections and helping young people find their place in the world.

We’re incredibly proud of the progress being made every day.

Thanks, as always, to:

What a first half term it has been at Active Futures Academy ❤️💙💛

When we opened our doors, we had a vision of creating a safe, supportive and inspiring environment where young people could reconnect with education, rebuild confidence and begin to believe in themselves again.

This half term, we have watched that vision start to become a reality.

From fitness sessions and padel, to sewing, creative projects, wellbeing activities, enterprise tasks and community events, our young people have embraced new experiences, challenged themselves and, most importantly, returned to learning.

We are incredibly proud of how every learner has settled into provision. For some, simply walking through the door again was a huge achievement. Now we are seeing engagement, smiles, conversations, routines being built and futures beginning to feel possible again.

Active Futures Academy is about far more than education alone. It is about relationships, belonging, confidence, wellbeing and helping young people rediscover their strengths.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us during our very first half term — families, schools, local organisations and community partners. We are only just getting started.

Here’s to an exciting next chapter for Active Futures Academy
