‼️ Announcement ‼️

Calling all university students... I am formally launching my proofreading service!

Trust me when I say that I know proofreading is the bane of most students lives 😅😅😅 & that many therefore refuse to do it. With that, I am perfectly willing to proofread your university assignments for you.

As a First Class English Language & Literature Graduate 🎓, I will focus on spelling, punctuation, grammar, cohesion, clarity and structure.

Please don’t be phased by the fact my subject perhaps isn’t yours... I am not focussing on the content of your work, more the grammatical and structural ways we can improve it. For example, I have a proven track record of helping nursing students to improve their assignments!!

So what do I offer??

📗 Confidential & personal proofreading

📕 Clear comments & appropriate suggestions

📘 Quick turn around to meet deadlines

📙 Introductory prices ⚠️ FIRST 750 WORDS FREE

I know that deadline time is ridiculously stressful so I’m here to hopefully reduce some of that stress for you! For any enquires at all, please call, message or email. 📝

‼️ Lesson 4 - Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) continued....

In earlier posts I have spoken about the importance of SPAG. It is something that is ‘supposed’ to be ingrained in us and yet, rightly so, most students struggle with at least one aspect of it. It is a necessary skill in education especially, but also most career paths.

Today we will talk about commas.

When do I use a comma?

📕 Use commas to separate independent clauses when they are joined by any of these seven coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, or, nor, so, yet.

‘Yesterday was her brother's birthday, so she took him out to dinner.’

📙 Use commas after introductory a) clauses, b) phrases, or c) words that come before the main clause.

‘While I was eating, the dog scratched at the door.’

‘However, you may not be satisfied with the results.’

📗 Use a pair of commas in the middle of a sentence to set off clauses, phrases, and words that are not essential to the meaning of the sentence. Use one comma before to indicate the beginning of the pause and one at the end to indicate the end of the pause. This is also known as parenthesis and is tested in KS2.

Clause: ‘That Tuesday, which happens to be my birthday, is the only day when I am available to meet.’

Phrase: ‘This restaurant has an exciting atmosphere. The food, on the other hand, is rather bland.’

Word: ‘I appreciate your hard work. In this case, however, you seem to have over-exerted yourself.’

TIP: The sentence should still make sense on its own, if the information within the commas is removed.

📘 Use commas to separate three or more words, phrases, or clauses written in a series. AKA a list.

‘The candidate promised to lower taxes, protect the environment, reduce crime, and end unemployment.’

📙 Use commas to separate two or more coordinate adjectives that describe the same noun.

‘He was a difficult, stubborn child.’

📒 Use a comma near the end of a sentence to separate contrasted coordinate elements or to indicate a distinct pause or shift.

‘He was merely ignorant, not stupid.’

📘 Use commas to set off all geographical names, items in dates (except the month and day), addresses (except the street number and name), and titles in names.

‘Birmingham, Alabama, gets its name from Birmingham, England.’

📕 Use a comma to shift between the main discourse and a quotation.

‘“I was able," she answered, "to complete the assignment."’

📗 Use commas wherever necessary to prevent possible confusion or misreading.

As exampled in the picture below...

‼️ Apologies for my hiatus - I’ve been busy settling into my new job at school!

I have recently whitnessed first hand how time off from school can severely impact a child’s education.

With that, I am now offering online English tuition specifically for those who may be either self isolating themselves, shielding or for those whose school is either completely shut or have been sent home in full year groups etc.

The sessions can be longer one off ‘catch ups’ or regular 1 hour slots to mimic their school timetable.

I can either,

📒 Plan, prepare and teach specific on need

OR

📕 Go through the lessons/ resources/ homework provided by school

I am acutely aware that the Coronavirus pandemic will have crippled some people’s finances. Therefore, I will consistently post English tips/ lesson plans/ fun facts on this page, in line with the curriculum, to support those who cannot afford private tuition at this time.

It is so so important that the next generation’s education is not irreversibly damaged by the situation we all find ourselves in.

📝 For any enquiries, please email, phone or message.

❗️Lesson 3

Let’s talk about SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar). Such skills are initially taught in primary school but are necessary skills used throughout high school, further education, most career paths and are useful for every day life.

Today we will address punctuation, specifically the use of capital letters (we will start easy and gradually build up).

When do we use a capital letter?

📘At the beginning of every new sentence.

📘For the personal pronoun ‘I’.

📘For proper nouns (i.e names).

📘For books, television and radio programmes, newspapers and magazines.

📘Days of the week and months of the year.

📘Historical periods or events.

📘Geographical locations and landmarks.

📘In postal addresses.

The next couple of mini lessons/ fun facts/ helpful tips will solely focus on improving spelling, punctuation and grammar (because it’s just too important!).

I am close to full capacity so please, if you are considering tuition, enquire ASAP for a free consultation!

❗️First session will be completely free of charge.

❗️ LESSON 2

Extending vocabulary is key to enhancing performance in English. Here’s my mini lesson on vocabulary...

On a weekly basis pick 15 words based on any topic, genre or interest and research what they mean in a dictionary (either online or book form). Once the meaning is understood use the words in a sentence (outside of those provided in the dictionary definition) throughout the week. They could be used in a written piece of work or in general conversation. Doing this on a weekly basis gradually extends vocabulary but also improves comprehension, and for those using a book, scimming & scanning skills.

This can be made more complex or easier dependant on key stage but is effective for KS2 all the way up to adult learners.

If you have any questions or you or your child is struggling with anything English related please don’t hesitate to contact me!

📗 Free tuition up until the new academic year
📕 Free consultations
📘 Free online help or advice on any lessons I post

‼️ BENEFITS OF IMPROVED ENGLISH SKILLS

🖊 Improves grades in other subjects.

‘Understanding Language provides access to the whole curriculum’ whether it be History, Science, Geography or even Maths you are expected to understand the question and to write academically.

🖊 Access to further education.

Similarly, strong English skills are an essential part of academia. Comprehension, cohesion, spelling, punctuation and grammar skills are pivotal in producing ANY academic work.

🖊 Employability.

Most recruiters look for communication skills. Written & verbal forms of communication are cemented in the classroom/ tuition and then transferred to the work enviroment. Without a strong command of the English Language, access to employment significantly reduces.

🖊 Knowledge is power.

The skill of reading cannot be undermined. It provides access to subject matter on literally any topic and every genre. Not only is this mentally stimulating and helps wellbeing but it also aids academic and professional opportunities.

Ultimately, as a core subject, English Language ability is absolutely fundamental in providing an academic and professional platform. 📒📕📗📘

‼️ FREE HALF AN HOUR TUITION SLOTS, WITH FREE CONSULTATIONS, ARE STILL AVAILABLE.

20/08/2020

I am very aware that not every parent or guardian can afford private tuition for their child.

With that, I have decided to use my page to provide helpful tips for homeschooling English. This way parents/ guardians/ children/ students can benefit from my service completely free of charge.

Lesson 1 -

📗 Comprehension.

If your child (or you) struggle to understand what they/ you are reading, it is useful to annotate the text for any relevant information and/ or language devices. For instance, underlining or highlighting main ideas, proper nouns, dates and locations. It is also beneficial to ask questions after reading the text. The questions will differ dependent on genre and tone and they can be simplified or made more complex. Examples include ‘who was the main character?’ or ‘what date did...happen? or ‘who or what else is involved?’. These questions are purely to prove that the text has been understood.

Ultimately, the key to improving comprehension skills is reading. I advise initially picking texts based purely on personal interests. This way you are naturally more engaged in understanding what the text is actually saying. You can then opt for less interesting texts to challenge your improved skill set.

📌 From now on I will post mini lessons, helpful tips, fun facts and definitions. This is my way of helping people that may not have the finances to pay for private tuition. Any questions at all about anything I post please don’t hesitate to message.

📌 My free half an hour tuition will be running until the first week in September in a bid to help students prepare for their transition back into school.

📌 Feedback!!

With the schools shutting in March, this parent felt that his children had missed out on too much schooling. With the new academic year approaching, the initial focus was to get the students back into ‘school mode’ in a way that was fun yet educational.

We are focussing on KS2 comprehension and KS4 Language exam preparation. I tailor both lessons to the need, level and interests of each student to improve confidence and aid engagement in the subject matter.

I am so so pleased that my students are finding my sessions helpful and I look forward to our next lessons! 📚

19/08/2020
