The first few months of parenthood can feel like grief, even when nothing has gone wrong.

You’re grieving your sleep. Your time. Your ability to leave the house without a 30-minute packing operation.

But this isn’t postnatal depression. It’s a known stage of adjustment that peaks between 8 and 16 weeks post-birth, and it passes.

Here’s what can help whilst it’s happening:

Get outside once a day, even if it is only to the end of the street. Daylight resets the chemicals that sleep deprivation disrupts.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself for everything to go perfectly. A fed baby and a parent who ate something today can still be a successful day.

Open up to someone and be honest about your struggles. Saying “I’m finding this hard” often helps more than you think.

If the low feeling has lasted longer than two weeks and is getting worse rather than better, then it’s worth a conversation with your GP or health visitor.
