A comment landed on a recent post that’s worth sharing.

Paul, from Mr Mole’s Chimney Sweeping, trained at Mr Soot Training Centre and went through our Combined Sweep, Installer and Business Bootcamp programme.

After leaving us, he raised his prices. By his own admission, he was in the same camp as most tradespeople: convinced that charging more meant losing work.

It didn’t. He’s busier than the subcontractors he sometimes brings in to keep up with demand — people who, in his words, can’t believe what he charges, and who need to do two jobs to his one.

This is exactly the outcome that programme is built around — not technique, but the confidence to run the business rather than let it run you.

The trades don’t have a pricing problem. They have a confidence problem dressed up as a customer problem.

I started with a £600 van in a trade most people barely even think about these days.

Nobody handed me a blueprint.

Nobody told me how far it could go.

Most established sweeps had already ‘decided’ where the ceiling was.

Stay in your lane. Know your place. Don’t draw attention to yourself.

Of course; I ignored every one of those.

10 years on and we’ve built a team, an internationally recognised HETAS training centre and businesses that runs while I’m thousands of miles away.

Same trade. Different result.

If you’re in trades and building something but others keep telling you to slow down, here’s my advice.

Ignore them.

They’re not bad people.

It’s just the ceiling they’re describing is theirs.

Not yours.

Embrace being the 1%.

You’ll be in good company.
