Are you are aiming for your child to attend grammar school in September 2024? If so, it is time to think about tuition!

To attend a grammar school, your child needs to complete entrance exams in Autumn 2023. The school will then use the results from these exams to decide on admissions. Children complete several papers which usually consist of an English, Maths, Verbal Reasoning and a Non Verbal Reasoning paper. For many children, the content in the Verbal Reasoning and Non Verbal Reasoning papers are new to them as it is not something that they experience or are taught at school. At Minnie Minds, we offer small group 11+ tuition with a maximum of 4 pupils per group. Sessions develop the skills and knowledge your child needs tackle these papers with confidence!

Is your child struggling to remember number bonds to 10?

Securing certain maths concepts, such as number bonds to 10, are really important to help children complete calculations mentally. These skills are used regularly and often needed to tackle more complex problems later down the line.

We have been using practical resources, songs and have introduced pictures to help this lovely learner to remember the number bonds to 10. She drew a picture for each number bond pair e.g. a doughnut with '8' and '2' sprinkles on top to help her to visualise the pairings.

If she forgot a number bond pair when playing a recall game, I only had to remind her of the picture and she was able to name the pair of numbers!

She has made great progress moving from 0 questions correct to 15 questions correct in 1 minute over just 3 sessions!

The best thing about tutoring is that you can personalise lessons to fit the specific needs of the learner. This week I have been working with a fantastic student to develop her confidence when spelling. We used different colours to show the separate syllables in the word and also to highlight the letters that were being omitted. These visual aids helped her to picture the word when later reordering the letters and when writing them independently. Great job 👏

One of my fantastic little learners is working to embed her number bond to 10 knowledge. We have sung songs, played interactive games and today we have been using play dough to recreate number bond to ten facts using a ten frame. She was very excited to use the play dough in maths and loved writing her answers in pink glittery gel pen! Well done for working so hard, you are making great progress 👏

Piaget (1952) explains how children at 2 – 6 years old learn to use language, think symbolically, and represent their ideas using pictures and objects. They are highly active, learning through pretend play and first-hand experiences.

Did you know it is not until the age of 7 that the child's brain begins to think in the abstract (Bredekamp, 1987) ?

It is so important to allow children these play experiences, give them opportunities to play and learn practically.

It has been 'back to school' for many of us over the last few weeks. For those of you who don't know, I am an experienced primary school teacher and started back at school last week too. The first two days back were teacher training days which covered a range of different teaching strategies and ideas that I will be implementing with my class and fantastic tutees. I can't wait to get started!

As a teacher, my main focus is to ensure that the children in my care feel happy, confident and safe. If children feel insecure and anxious they will not be able to learn, resulting in school and the learning process becoming boring and unenjoyable! As an educator, it is vital to understand how the individual child learns and what they need to be involved and happy with the learning process. What do they enjoy? Which methods allow them to learn best? How can I empower this child and help them to succeed? I believe that active and practical learning is a fantastic way to engage primary aged pupils and allows them to learn, progess and achieve. We want to create happy learners who explore, ask questions and investigate. We don't want to place ceilings for our children. They need an environment where they can thrive and flourish. At Minnie Minds, I bring all of my classroom experience, knowledge and research to create the best possible learning experience for my students. Let's make learning fun again! Let's help children grow 🌳
