Congratulations to Xen and Mio for passing their gradings last week. Xen showed that his knowledge had really improved since his last grading and continues to show improvements each week and was graded 6th kyu. Mio has been with the club for 10 years and has achieved her 1st kyu rank, the last grade that I can award on my own. Black belt next Mio. Well done guys.

So what does this mean? It's just 2 bits of ribbon. You can buy a whole reel of this for just a few pence if you look hard enough. But you can say the same for the belts that we train for and the fabled black belt. Hey, If you really wanted to you can just buy any colour belt you want online. Want a black belt? Sure. Its easy if you go to the right shop or site. And some people don't think any karate belts are worth anything anyway as we're just dancing around in white pajamas anyhow (Ssshhhh. Don't tell them otherwise. 🤫).

In some parts of the world there are only ever 2 belts, white and then black. Apparently you would be training and then your Sensei would pull you aside hand you a black belt and you would just carry on with your training. No ceremony, no fanfare, no nothing just carry on with a new belt.

Not sure how true this story is but I like the thought of it anyway. The story goes like this. There is only one belt, a white one which you wear on your very first day of training. But, as you train and sweat, blood, tears and dirt make the belt more and more darker. So there never was a black belt...Just a more worn and grubby white belt, blacker than the pure white belts due to experience and training. I like the idea that its the hard work of the person wearing the belt than the belt itself. And I like the fact that hygiene now plays a big part in our lives...well to some of us anyway 🤣🤣.

So back to the ribbon. This might be nothing to a lot of people but to me and my fellow martial artist is shows hard work, dedication, perseverance, courage, commitment and skills obtained through training along with lots of other things that I won't list here as i will be here all day. Basically it's a step towards wherever you want to be. So if it is your first grade or even your last and it's 2 pieces of ribbon, a belt, a sash, a badge or a piece of paper be proud of what you have accomplished.

Hey, thinking about it Daniel San from the karate kid went straight to black belt thanks to a bit of thieving from his karate instuctor and he went on to win the tournament. 🤣🤣

Huge congratulations to these legends Max and Buddy who both passed their Red belts. Both worked extremely hard to achieve their grades. Won't be long before I'm posting about their yellow belts. Well done boys. Keep up the hard work.

I had an amazing Saturday training with these great Senseis. It was a great day and time flew by but so much to unpack and try out with my students. I missed last year's seminars as it was held in Germany but it was great seeing old faces who i haven't seen in a while and making new friends. Thanks to everyone who took the time to train with me but particularly to my good friend Lee Adams for organising the entire event. I keep promising him that I will train with his club more often. Let's see if I can do a better job this time. 🤣. Seriously great fun and recommend to anyone if you can make it.

I had a fantastic weekend of karate this weekend. I started off (or ended the week) with 2 fantastic red belt gradings. Saturday afternoon training with Richard Hang Hong and his students over at SRK martial arts. As fun as it is to keep studying your own system I think its more healthy to see how others think and see if you can learn and grow from them. Never replacing but adding. That saturday evening I had a BBQ hosted by a long term karate friend. Not training but so nice to catch up. It was a great evening made even better by seeing my instructor Paul Natzyl there and friends who still train with me and friends who used to train too. Sunday morning back to my dojo for my Sunday class and to practice what I learnt from Saturday and play around with some boxing techniques. A tiring but worthwhile weekend. Thank you Richard and to everyone at SRK Martial arts and to Andrew for hosting a great get together.

Congratulations to this superstar. Charlotte passed her grading and is now the proud owner of a purple belt. Her knowledge of Hojo Undo is brilliant often knowing techniques way above her grade. This is probably down to all her families karate training. Even big sister Evelyn wanted a photo with her little sister too. Congratulations.

Let's get something straight right from the beginning. Dave here does not need karate. He is more than capable in handling himself in most situations. And yet he turns up on a Monday to train with us all and listen to my views on combat and Uechi. And this is one the reasons why I have so much respect for him. He chooses to learn a martial art that his family all do and he wants to be there to help and support them. Okay one day he might have to defend himself against other strong guys and it might help him fight better. But its his attitude to learning our style of karate that I respect. On to the next grade Dave. Well done on achieving your 2nd piece of little green ribbon. 🤣
You deserve it.

Another week, another great grading. Here we have Patrick who has been working really hard in achieving his purple belt. He has been sending me videos asking me to correct his form, asking important questions and ultimately working on improving himself every day, not just on karate days. All of this hard work has paid off and last Friday I awarded Patrick his purple belt. A job well done Patrick.

Congratulations to Theodore and Arthur on completing their yellow belt grading. Despite the heat and trying to kill off their teacher with horrible stretching exercises they performed very well. Keep up the good work gentlemen.
