Essex Medical Training was set up by David Jones with the aim to promote and deliver high standard healthcare related courses to all sectors. David's career in healthcare began over 35 years ago with the London Ambulance Service, where he trained as a paramedic. David's passion and ability to impart knowledge was quickly noticed, seeing him progress to become the youngest instructor in the service

at the time. Now, with a reputation for high standards, reliability and passion in the delivery of courses, he continues his hard work and commitment to providing high quality instructor led courses. David's Essex Medical Training boasts a bank of experienced healthcare educators and instructors which includes experienced Paramedics and Advanced skill practitioners. Over the years, customers have included large NHS providers, Government bodies, Fire and rescue services, GP surgeries, schools and care home groups.

Three of our tutors are working across three different schools today across the county, delivering essential first aid and allergy awareness training to staff ahead of a busy academic year.

The sessions provide staff with the practical skills to manage a range of first aid emergencies, including the recognition and treatment of severe allergic reactions and anaphylaxis.

Alongside our work in schools, we continue to fulfil our ongoing NHS training commitments across the region.

Last summer, 215 children and teenagers were hospitalised with serious barbecue burns.

252 children were admitted to an NHS specialist Burns Service in 2025 with sunburn — up 46.5% from 2024.

And on hot days over 25°C, drownings triple. Most summer emergencies come down to what happens in the first 60 seconds — before an ambulance can possibly arrive.

🔥 Burn or scald — cool under running water for a full 20 minutes. No ice, no butter, no creams. (And remember: disposable BBQs stay dangerously hot for hours.)

🌊 Someone struggling in the water — don’t go in after them. Reach or throw something that floats, and call 999.

🐝 Sting with swollen lips, tongue or wheezing — that’s anaphylaxis. Use their adrenaline auto-injector and call 999.

🥵 Too much heat — shade, cool them down rapidly, hydrate. Still not feeling right after 30 minutes? Seek urgent advice or dial 999 in an emergency.

Good training should feel relevant to the person sitting in the room.

You can cover a lot of information with a PowerPoint, but clinical skills aren’t really learned by watching someone talk through slides. People need the opportunity to practise, ask questions, work through scenarios and understand how things actually look in the real world.

That’s why we place so much value on the experience of our instructors.

When someone has dealt with real emergencies, they can add context that’s difficult to get from a textbook. They can talk through what happens when the situation isn’t straightforward, answer the “what if?” questions and help learners understand why we do things, rather than simply teaching them a process to remember.

The practical side matters too. Getting hands-on with equipment, working through realistic scenarios and having the opportunity to make mistakes in a safe environment all help build confidence.

Ultimately, we want people to leave our training feeling that if they were faced with a real situation tomorrow, they’d be better prepared to deal with it.

A busy few days in the classrooms at Essex Medical Training.

Teachers, TAs, office staff, lunchtime supervisors — this one's for all of you. 💙

From September, Benedict's Law means every school in England must train ALL staff in allergy awareness and emergency response — not just the first aiders. Add a published allergy policy, spare adrenaline pens on site, and care plans for pupils with serious allergies, and that's the new legal baseline.

It sounds like a lot. It isn't — one INSET day sorts the training, and it's the kind that genuinely matters. Around two children in every classroom live with a food allergy, and a reaction doesn't wait for the nearest first aider.

It has been quieter than usual on our channels — for the best possible reason.

Recent months have seen our team delivering across the full breadth of our work: clinical education for NHS staff, first aid training for care homes and schools, provision for construction sites, clinical inductions for new ambulance personnel, FREC qualifications, and specialist responder training at a high-risk site.

It’s been a busy start to the year at Essex Medical Training.

Cohorts of FREC students have successfully completed their courses and moved one step closer to their careers in the emergency services.
Over a thousand NHS staff have been trained and refreshed in essential clinical skills.
Schools across our region have been set up for the year ahead with Paediatric First Aid training delivered to their teams.
