How does learning actually happen? Tom Sherrington's model of the learning process gives trainees a clear way to think about it.

Our trainees use it to plan for memory rather than for activity: what pupils need to already know, how new material is introduced in small enough steps, where practice and retrieval fit, and how you find out what has stuck.

The test is always the same one. What did the pupils learn, and how do we know?

What are we looking for in a trainee?

Not a finished teacher. We are looking for people who notice children: who can tell the difference between a pupil who has understood and one who is nodding along.

Alongside that: the resilience to be given feedback and act on it, curiosity about why something worked, and enough organisation to hold together a demanding year.

The subject knowledge, the behaviour strategies and the assessment are what the training year is for.

What you actually need in order to train as a teacher:

- A degree, any class
- GCSE grade 4 or above in English, maths and science, or a recognised equivalent

That is the list. Not a first, not a teaching background, not a particular degree subject.

If you are unsure whether your qualifications count, ask us. We look at equivalences all the time.

You already know the children. You know which ones need a second explanation, who is masking, who has had a difficult morning.

If you are a teaching assistant with a degree, the Level 6 Teaching Apprenticeship lets you train as a teacher in the school you already work in, on a salary, while keeping all of that knowledge.

You will need your school to employ and host you throughout the apprenticeship. We can help you have that conversation.

Nursery and pre-school leaders: you already have practitioners who are excellent with children. EYITT turns that into a recognised teaching qualification without taking them out of your setting.

Our fully funded Graduate Employment Based route develops early years teachers in the room where they already work. The children keep the adult they are attached to, and your setting keeps the expertise.

KNOW IT, then SEE IT, then DO IT.

Our trainees have been studying Willingham's model of the mind: how working memory, long-term memory and the classroom environment interact.

It matters because of what it changes in practice. A child who cannot follow a three-part instruction may not be inattentive; their working memory may simply be full. Trainees learn to notice that, then to break the instruction down, model it, and check who has understood before moving on.

Next they will see it in their placement classrooms, try it themselves, and evaluate what changed for the pupils.
