The notorious stretch of sea called the Pentland Firth divides Caithness, the northern-most mainland county in Scotland, from the rugged islands of Orkney. Due to the violence of the tides, currents and weather the Pentland Firth became known as 'Hellsmouth' to the many vessels that have passed through there over the centuries. This page aims to provide information on some of the many shipwrecks claimed not only in Hellsmouth, but also off the East coast of Caithness.
