Yesterday, a group of our Year 2 children had the opportunity to visit our sister school, Herne Infants, for an exciting sports competition. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to try new activities, develop their sporting skills and, most importantly, have fun with their friends. Throughout the competition, the children took part in a range of activities, including curling, football, gymnastics, speed stacking and skipping. They showed great enthusiasm, determination and teamwork as they challenged themselves and encouraged one another. After the competition, the children had the opportunity to spend time with their new friends from Herne in their playground. They enjoyed riding bikes, playing fun games and making new friendships. It was lovely to see the children mixing together, laughing and enjoying the shared experience. A huge well done to all of our Year 2 children for their fantastic effort, positive attitude and excellent sportsmanship. They represented our school brilliantly and came home with lots of happy memories from a wonderful day at Herne! Thanks to Herne Infants for hosting this event and to Mr Mead for organising a morning of sporting fun!

The children in Sunbeams Nursery walked down to see the new whole school arts installation in the main school entrance. We used our noticing skills to spot all the different creative items that had been made and used to create the display. We were really pleased to see the bunting and paint box that we created for the project. We noticed that one of the walls was covered in different coloured spots or dots, in the style of the artist Yayoi Kusama and so it prompted us to read The Dot, a book that we are introducing to the children this week to inspire some artwork for another whole school display. We have already begun creating our own dots this week using transient art. We will be using paint and other mark making tools as the week goes on, with inspiration from artists such as Wassily Kandinsky.

Jo and Tara from Animate Arts Company came back into school today to pull all of the children’s ideas and work into one giant masterpiece! It is colourful, CREATive and full of joy!

Our Reception children have loved getting to know Mrs Memmott, our fabulous music teacher, this term during their music lessons each week. We join Mrs Memmott in the hall each Tuesday where we have the opportunity to learn new songs, explore musical instruments and how our bodies can move in different ways in response to music. This term we have been learning about high and low sounds and beginning to explore beat in a range of different ways, including using the parachute, claves and drums.

Today Jo from Arts Company is in school to build our new CREATE themed entrance installation! Last week, the children in Sunbeams were very busy completing their art challenges inspired by arty and creative resources. They worked on their hand eye coordination as they threaded paint drips onto ribbon to create some bunting. The children also decorated a box with shiny paper and painted the inside to make it look like a box of paints. We can't wait to see our creations along with the rest of the schools efforts when it is all completed!

Yesterday, we welcomed back Jo and Nova from Animate Arts Company who led the children in some artist inspired workshops, creating giant art pieces in the style of Joan Miro, Yayoi Kusama and Jackson Po***ck, ready for our new CREATE entrance installation! The children have also been set creative challenges to make some giant cardboard creations to replicate the things you may find inside an art cupboard. They will be busy working collaboratively to design and build their constructions, ready for Jo to return on Monday next week, when it will all be pulled together into our new installation! We cannot wait to share it with you!

In their English lessons this week, Year 2 have been exploring their new story, 'Emma Jane’s Aeroplane', by using loose parts from the playground to design and create their own aeroplanes. They used their imagination and creativity to build different types of aircraft, making links to their previous learning about Amelia Earhart in History. This retrieval of prior knowledge helped the children recall key facts about early aviation and use these ideas to support their English learning.

Yesterday, Year 1 visited the Whitstable museum to enrich their learning in History! In the next coming weeks, they will be exploring the question 'How has Whitstable changed?' and focusing on the Whitstable flood and the effects it had on the community. The children had a wonderful time exploring the museum and finding artefacts with their friends. Peter, from the museum showed the children pictures of the flood and spoke to them about why it happened and how people had to continue to go to school and work on boats! Thank you for such a warm welcome and for sharing your knowledge with us as always.

In their PE lessons this week, Year 2 have taken part in Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA), exploring their local environment through map work around the town and beach. They developed their navigation and observation skills while working together to follow routes and explore their surroundings. The children have also participated in team-building games and problem-solving challenges, developing communication, risk taking and trust as they worked together to complete each activity.

In their Art lessons this week, Year 2 have been exploring portraits inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso. The children looked at the different ways the artist used shape and colour within his work. They experimented with different shapes and positions for facial features, creating imaginative and expressive portraits rather than realistic ones. The children used bold colours to add character and mood to their artwork, developing confidence in making creative choices. Here are a few of our young artists creations!
