When a child can't attend school, it's easy for people to assume they've disengaged from learning.

Often, the opposite is true.

The children I work with frequently have a deep curiosity about the world. What they struggle with is the pressure, overwhelm and demands that have become associated with education.

When this young person first joined me, even the idea of attending a session felt like a huge step.

We started online.

No pressure. No expectations. No rushing.

Just taking the time to build trust.

Every activity was carefully planned around her interests and delivered in a way that felt safe and manageable. We followed her lead, celebrated small wins and focused on connection before curriculum.

Over time, something wonderful began to happen.

She started to relax.

She became more comfortable attending sessions in person.

She began engaging with activities, sharing her ideas and showing the curiosity that had always been there beneath the anxiety.

This is why I believe relationships come first.

Progress doesn't always begin with worksheets, targets or academic interventions.

Sometimes it begins with a child feeling safe enough to walk through the door.

Thank you to this parent for sharing their experience.

Moments like these remind me why a low-demand, child-centred approach can be so powerful.

“It’s like seeing a different child.” 🥹

This is exactly why I created House of Orkney Education.

So many children are trying to learn whilst overwhelmed, dysregulated or masking their way through the school day.

And when that happens, learning becomes hard work.

Not because they can’t learn…
…but because their environment, pace or approach often isn’t meeting their needs.

At House of Orkney Education, sessions are designed differently.

✨ Calm, low-demand environments
✨ Movement built into learning
✨ Interest-led activities that build engagement naturally
✨ Creative approaches that reduce pressure
✨ Relationship-first teaching through the NEST Approach™
✨ Sessions adapted around the child - not the other way around

This testimonial means so much because confidence, regulation and emotional safety always come before progress.

And when children feel safe enough to engage?

That’s when we often start to see the real child underneath the overwhelm.

Whether a child is:
• struggling with anxiety around learning
• finding the classroom environment too much
• needing a more personalised approach
• autistic / ADHD
• emotionally overwhelmed
• or simply losing confidence in themselves…

there are other ways to support learning.

Thank you so much to this parent for such a thoughtful review. 🥹

POV:
You ask your child how school was
and receive absolutely nothing back 😅

“How was school today?”

“Fine.” (or maybe just a shrug or a grunt!)

It’s one of the most common conversations parents have with children after school… and often one of the most frustrating 😅

But children aren’t refusing to talk because they’re rude, disengaged or hiding something.

Often, they’re simply exhausted.

School requires children to manage huge amounts of cognitive, emotional and sensory demand all day long:
• listening
• transitions
• social interaction
• noise
• concentration
• emotional regulation
• masking anxiety or overwhelm

By home time, many children need decompression before they can process and reflect on the day.

This is why children often open up:
🚗 in the car
🎨 while drawing
🛁 in the bath
🌙 at bedtime

Usually when pressure disappears.

At House of Orkney Education, we think carefully about emotional load, regulation and psychological safety, because children learn and communicate best when they feel calm enough to do so.

Did your child answer “fine” today too? 😅👇🏻
It used to drive me mad!
