Fright night done right: Top Halloween safety tips for families

As Halloween approaches, Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and Northumberland County Council Trading Standards are reminding residents to put safety first when purchasing costumes or making decorations for the spooky celebrations.

While Halloween is a fun time for families, some popular seasonal items can pose serious risks if safety isn't considered. Fire crews and Trading Standards officers are encouraging people to make safe choices to help prevent injuries and accidents.

Residents are encouraged to:
- Choose flame-resistant costumes and keep them away from open flames and heat sources.
- Use LED lights in pumpkins and lanterns rather than candles.
- Check costumes carry a UKCA or CE mark and purchase them from reputable retailers.
- Ensure children are visible and supervised when trick-or-treating.
- Avoid trailing fabrics, loose accessories or decorations that could create trip or fire hazards.
- Check that any button batteries in toys, decorations or novelty items are securely enclosed.
- Remove drawstrings around the neck area of children's costumes where possible.

The children in Year 4 have been learning all about the digestive system of humans and animals. They have recently made their own stomach contents and fed these through a makeshift stomach and intestines before passing them out! As disgusting as this sounds, the children have had great fun whilst learning. In keeping with this, today they were visited by a representative from The Wildlife Trust who showed them animal skulls and teeth along with learning about their digestive systems and handling real owl pellets! The children looked through the pellets to find small bones and detect exactly which animal they came from and thoroughly loved the activity - thank you to The Wildlife Trust for this.

Thank you to everyone who participated in today's fundraising non-uniform day for Young Minds - we raised an AMAZING £191. Thank you to everyone especially Mrs. Burton who buzzed around school all day in her bumble bee outfit making the children smile as they participated in this worthwhile FUNdraiser! 🐝 🐝 🐝

On Monday, ten Year 4 pupils participated in an 'Active 60 Influencers' workshop at Ashington Leisure Centre. The session was run by Rachael Mackenzie, World Champion Thai Boxer and British Boxing champion wo is also a resilience and mindset coach.
The children received training on how to influence other children in the school to get active. It was great fun and the children learnt lots of new games which they are excited to try out at school during play and lunch times.

This week Reception have been making porridge after reading the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They followed the recipe sequence to make the porridge with oats and oat milk. Then they went for a walk in the meadow to harvest some fruit to add flavour to the porridge and let it cool so it was JUST RIGHT!! Good job Reception!

Year 4 have had a brilliant time this afternoon making their bread dough based on their favourite flavours from last week's taste tests. The children have took home their creations (along with cooking instructions!) to bake. The children have been asked to share their baked end results on Google Classroom which we will share with you in an updated post next week.

Thank you to everyone who attended our Reading Workshops in classes this week - we were amazed at the amount of you who were able to attend. Thank you all for giving up your time to come and learn all about their reading alongside your children. The children love these activities and have so much fun and we are so pleased to hear that yo do too as parents/carers! Thank you for supporting your children.

Our first two weeks back have flown by. The children have all settled back into school well and we have welcomed our new Nursery children.
The children have all been super busy and classrooms have had everything from Owl Babies to mysterious eggs arrive and LOTS of exciting learning has been happening.
We have lots of things planned for the coming weeks, so please make sure to keep checking the school website calendar for forthcoming events.
