“Brush in the morning, brush at night, keep your smile healthy and bright!”

This week in Discovery, the children have been enjoying our Snappy Croc story together! 🐊🦷
As part of our PSED learning, we have been focusing on developing effortful control, particularly learning how to wait patiently and take turns. The children practised waiting for their turn to brush Snappy Croc’s teeth, with adults modelling calm waiting and using phrases such as “my turn next.” We gave lots of praise and encouragement when children managed to wait, helping them begin to understand when it is their turn and when it is somebody else’s.
We have also been supporting the children to seek out others and share experiences. While exploring the story, children were encouraged to sit alongside their friends, look at the pictures together and talk about what they could see. 📖💛 Adults supported conversations with questions such as, “Can you tell me what you can see?” and “Can you show your friend the crocodile?”
It has been lovely to see the children beginning to share their excitement with one another, communicate with their friends and practise those important early turn-taking and waiting skills through a fun and familiar story. 🌟

🥕 Healthy Explorers – Week 1
We have had lots of fun this bank holiday week, welcoming some of our lovely new friends who have joined us and spending time getting to know one another. 💛 The children have enjoyed exploring new areas, resources and toys, building confidence and becoming increasingly familiar with their environment.
As part of our learning this week, the children took part in a Healthy Food Hunt! 🍎🥦 We searched around the room and outdoor areas for different healthy foods before bringing them back together. The children practised counting, recognising numerals and matching quantities, turning our activity into an exciting hunt and investigation.
We also enjoyed our Healthy Explorers Room Hunt, which was particularly helpful for children who are becoming familiar with Explorers and their new key people. The children explored the room to identify where our different healthy routines happen, including washing our hands, eating snack, drinking water, using the toilet and going outside. 🚰🧼🌳
Using visual prompts, we talked about what happens where and what comes next in our nursery day, helping the children to develop their confidence, independence and understanding of familiar routines.
It has been a lovely week of exploring, building new friendships and settling into our routines together. 🌟🥕

🐄🐘 This Week in Discovery – Animal Adventures! 🌾🐾
This week, our Discovery children have been busy becoming animal keepers! The children helped to rescue animals and move them safely into their enclosures before comparing how many animals were in each one. We explored mathematical language including lots, some and more, with some children beginning to use fewer and the same when comparing the different groups. 🦁🐒
We have also been exploring heavy and light using our farm resources. The children lifted and compared items such as food sacks, watering cans and animal feed, deciding whether each one felt heavy or light. Some children even made predictions before lifting the objects and checked whether their guesses were correct! ⚖️🌾

🦁👮 Week 4 in Explorers – Adventures & Investigations! 🔎🌟
This week, the children have been exploring How to Be a Lion, discussing the characters, setting and events before using small-world animals to create their very own adventures. The children imagined stories where Lion helped someone, using descriptive language and developing their storytelling, communication and imagination. 🦁📚
Our maths learning turned us into police officers investigating a mystery! 👮‍♀️🔎 The children searched for numbered evidence bags, identified the numerals and collected the matching number of pieces of evidence before returning them to the police station. This supported their number recognition, counting and one-to-one correspondence, while adding lots of excitement and imaginative play!
We have also had lots of fun helping to add our new tyres to the construction area, which the children have already been putting to good use to create bigger and better structures! 🛞🔨 We have enjoyed plenty of mark making and, most importantly, welcoming lots of new friends into our classroom this week. 💛
We were also very lucky to have a special visit from a midwife! 👶💕 She taught the children all about how midwives help to care for babies when they are born. The children even had the opportunity to explore a Doppler and listen to what it might sound like inside Mummy’s tummy when there is a baby growing in there – a very exciting experience for everyone! 🩺✨

📦👷 This Week in Discovery 👷📦

Our Discovery children have been busy developing their early maths skills through lots of hands-on play this week!
The children enjoyed Packing the Animal Boxes, filling boxes with different animals before comparing how many were inside. Together, we explored mathematical language such as lots, some and more, with some children beginning to challenge themselves by using fewer and the same. 🦁🐘📦
We have also been busy becoming little builders! The children loaded wheelbarrows with different materials before exploring which loads felt heavy and which felt light. Through lifting, transporting and comparing their loads, the children developed their understanding of weight while also strengthening their bodies through physical play. 👷‍♀️🧱

🚂🩺 Week 3 in Explorers – People Who Help Us 👮‍♀️🌟

This week, our Explorers have been busy learning through our People Who Help Us theme!
The children became doctor’s receptionists, choosing numbered appointment cards and counting the correct number of patients into the waiting room. This fun role-play activity supported their numeral recognition, counting and one-to-one correspondence, while helping them understand that the last number counted tells us how many there are altogether. 🩺🔢
We also became Story Detectives with our core book, The Train Ride. The children explored how we read a book from left to right and top to bottom, before matching illustrations to the story and putting events back into the correct sequence. They used descriptive vocabulary to talk about what was happening, supporting their early literacy, storytelling and communication skills. 🚂🔎📚
We were especially excited to welcome the police into nursery this week! One of our lovely parents came in for a special show and tell, helping the children learn all about the police and the important ways they help us in our community. 👮‍♀️🚓
Alongside all of this, we have enjoyed lots of mark making and sensory exploration. The children particularly loved exploring pasta sheets – breaking them into pieces and then getting creative by colouring them in! 🎨 We’ve certainly had another busy week of learning, exploring and having fun together! 💛

📦🐘 This Week in Discovery 🐘📦
This week, our Discovery children have been busy becoming delivery workers! The children enjoyed transporting animal parcels and exploring which boxes felt heavy and which felt light. They lifted and compared the different parcels, helping them to develop an early understanding of weight and encouraging them to use mathematical language such as heavy, light, heavier and lighter. We also had lots of fun packing our animals into boxes! The children explored how many animals were inside each box and compared the different amounts using words such as lots, some and more. Through this hands-on activity, the children developed their early counting and comparison skills while building confidence in using mathematical vocabulary during their play. 🦒🦁 Alongside our focused learning, the children have had lots of fun exploring water play in the woodland, pouring, splashing and investigating together. 💦🌿
We have also been busy developing our gross motor skills in the construction area. The children enjoyed playing on the swing and practising kicking and throwing balls, supporting their balance, coordination, strength and confidence in using their whole bodies.

🚂📦 Week 1 in Explorers – People Who Help Us 📮🌟
This week, the children have continued exploring our core book, The Train Ride. We looked at the front cover, title, author and illustrator before reading together and discussing the different places and people we met along the journey. The children then helped to sequence and retell the story, using descriptive vocabulary to develop their communication, literacy and storytelling skills. 🚂📚
For maths, the children became postal workers, delivering parcels to numbered houses. They matched the correct number of parcels to each numeral, developing their number recognition, counting and one-to-one correspondencethrough imaginative play. 📮🏠 We have also had lots of fun learning about the solar eclipse, creating our own pinhole projector boxes, discovering the Perseid meteor shower, and finding out about the new babies at Longleat Zoo! 🌙🐾 Of course, we've also enjoyed plenty of our usual woodland antics – exploring, climbing and having fun together! 🌿💚

Week 1 in Discovery...
This month, our core book is Dear Zoo, and this week the children will be bringing the story to life through a fun mathematical sorting activity. Using a variety of toy zoo animals, they will sort the animals into different groups and compare the quantities, using mathematical language such as lots, some, more and fewer. As they play, the children will be developing their early maths skills by comparing groups, recognising differences in quantity and using mathematical vocabulary in meaningful contexts. They will also be encouraged to talk about the different animals, explain their thinking, and work together with their friends, supporting both their communication and problem-solving skills. By linking our maths learning to a familiar story, we are helping the children make meaningful connections while fostering a love of books, language and learning through play.
The children have continued exploring our core book, Dear Zoo, through an exciting hands-on maths investigation. Using a variety of toy zoo animals, they made predictions about whether each animal would be heavy or light before using balance scales to test their ideas. Throughout the activity, the children thought like little scientists by making predictions, testing their ideas and discussing what they discovered. They developed their understanding of weight, compared objects using mathematical language such as heavy, light, heavier and lighter, and began to understand how balance scales work. By linking our mathematical learning to a familiar story, the children have continued to build confidence in early mathematical concepts while developing their curiosity, communication skills and problem-solving through fun, practical play.
As always, we have had lots of fun enjoying our outdoor environment this week! The children loved spending time in the sand, exploring the different textures and experiencing the feel of the sand between their toes. We have also been busy investigating our woodland area, carefully searching for bugs and other minibeasts, encouraging curiosity, observation and a love of the natural world. It has been wonderful to see the children's excitement as they discovered new creatures and shared their findings with their friends.

Week 1 in Explorers...
This week, the children have been exploring our core book, The Train Ride. Together, we discussed the front cover, title, author and illustrator before enjoying the story. As we read, the children talked about the different places the train travelled through and the important people who help us in our communities, including train drivers, station staff and ticket inspectors.
The children enjoyed using descriptive language to talk about the characters and settings before working together to sequence and retell the story. This supported the development of their communication and language skills, early literacy, memory, sequencing and storytelling, while helping them build a wider understanding of the important roles people play within our community.
Our maths learning continued with an exciting Firefighter Number Rescue activity! The children became firefighters responding to an emergency by selecting a numeral card before using tongs to rescue the matching number of people from a "burning building". They carefully counted each person using one-to-one correspondence before finding the total number they had rescued.
This engaging activity helped the children develop their number recognition, counting skills and understanding that the final number counted represents the total quantity. Using tongs also strengthened their fine motor skills and hand muscles, helping to prepare them for future writing while making learning active, purposeful and fun.
Alongside our focused activities, we have continued preparing for school by practising our independence through dressing-up activities. Even some of our younger children thoroughly enjoyed joining in! We have also had lots of fun in the woodland, developing our strength, balance and coordination as we climbed, swung and explored our gross motor equipment, including the swing and ladder.
It has been another fantastic week full of learning, imagination and adventure. We are so proud of the children's enthusiasm, confidence and growing independence as they continue to learn through play every day! 🚂🚒🌿

🌈 "Little feet, big dreams, endless possibilities."

This week in Discovery...

We have had a wonderful time learning through play and exploring together. As part of our learning, the children enjoyed our Busy Bird Bath activity, taking turns to wash and care for toy birds in a sensory water tray. This provided lots of opportunities to practise sharing resources, waiting patiently for a turn, and using kind words while talking about how we can care for animals. We also linked our learning to our core rhyme, "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," through a fun counting game. The children rolled a dice, counted the matching number of bird counters into toy boats, and practised their counting and one-to-one correspondence skills as they explored numbers up to five.
Alongside our planned activities, the children were excited to explore some new resources, which sparked lots of imaginative play and curiosity. We also spent plenty of time down in our woodland area, climbing, balancing, investigating nature and developing our physical skills, before returning indoors to enjoy imaginative dressing-up play, where the children created their own characters and stories together.

This week in Explorers...

We have enjoyed lots of exciting learning through play as we continued exploring our core story, We're Going on a Bear Hunt.
The children loved taking part in a Bear Hunt Letter Trail in our woodland. They searched high and low for hidden bear paw prints, each displaying a different letter, before gathering together to identify the sounds and discover which letters matched the beginning of their own names. They then had a go at writing their names onto their paw prints before venturing into the bear's den to show the hidden teddy bear. This activity supported early phonics, letter recognition, name writing and confidence in mark making.
As part of our Getting Ready for School learning, the children worked together to practise dressing in a variety of school uniform items. They enjoyed helping one another fasten buttons, put on jumpers, cardigans and shirts, and talked excitedly about starting school. This wonderful role-play activity encouraged teamwork, independence, communication and problem-solving while helping to build confidence for the exciting transition ahead.
Alongside our planned activities, the children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring a range of new resources across the classroom. In our construction area, they have been using their imaginations to design and build impressive large-scale structures, working collaboratively to share ideas, solve problems and bring their creations to life. Outdoors, the children have had lots of fun taking part in ball games, practising throwing, catching and kicking while developing their teamwork, coordination and communication skills. It has been wonderful to see the children working together, supporting one another and building such positive friendships through their play.

🌊🐦 This Week in Discovery Room 🐦🌊
This week our little learners have been busy developing their mathematical skills, communication and friendships through two exciting activities linked to our core rhyme, "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." 🚣
The children have been taking turns rowing a role-play boat, choosing where their adventure takes them and working together with their friends. Through this activity they have been practising listening, sharing, waiting for their turn and using their imaginations as they sailed to exciting destinations!
Our children have also been exploring early maths by counting birds into their nests. They carefully counted each bird, matched quantities and talked about which nests had more or fewer birds. Some children even challenged themselves to compare which nest had the most and the least birds.
These playful experiences are helping to build confidence with counting, turn-taking, communication and cooperative play—all through fun, hands-on learning.
🌿 We have also been making the most of our outdoor environment! The children have enjoyed exploring the woodland, helping to care for our nature garden by watering the trees, zooming around on the ride-on toys, and getting creative in our newly filled sandpits. Outdoor play provides wonderful opportunities to develop physical skills, teamwork, curiosity and a love of the natural world.

🚀🌙 This Week in Explorers Room 🌙🚀
This week our Explorers have been reaching for the stars through exciting activities inspired by our core book, Whatever Next! 📖
The children became astronauts as they searched for their own named rockets before practising their mark-making and early writing skills. They carefully wrote their names onto labels and matched them to their rockets, helping to build name recognition, letter formation and confidence in writing. Some children challenged themselves to write their full name and even had a go at writing space-themed words such as rocket and moon.

Our astronauts then worked together to prepare for their mission to the moon! In small groups, the children discussed what they would need for their adventure, packed their rockets and listened carefully to each other's ideas. They practised taking turns, sharing thoughts, making decisions together and solving problems as a team, all while using their wonderful imaginations.

These exciting space adventures have supported the children's literacy, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills, while encouraging creativity and collaborative learning.
The children have also been thoroughly enjoying our new Ice Cream Parlour role-play area. Using cones, sand and a variety of natural materials they discovered around the woodland, they created imaginative ice creams for one another. This wonderful activity has encouraged creativity, imaginative play, communication and collaboration as the children took turns serving customers, discussing their creations and sharing ideas with their friends.

🐦 This week in Discovery Room, the children have been working together to build bird nests using natural materials. As they gathered sticks, leaves and moss, they practised sharing resources, taking turns and cooperating with their friends to create cosy nests inspired by our core story. This wonderful activity encouraged teamwork, communication and imaginative play while helping the children develop an appreciation for the natural world.

🪶The children also enjoyed joining in with a maths activity, the children explored counting by collecting feathers for their birds. They carefully counted the correct number of feathers, matching quantities up to 5 and placing them onto bird outlines. Some children extended their learning by rolling a dice, counting the spots and finding the matching number of feathers, helping to develop their number recognition, counting skills and one-to-one correspondence in a fun, hands-on way.

🌿 The children have also had a fantastic time enjoying our outdoor environment. They loved cooling off in the water play, creating exciting obstacle courses, exploring the woodland mud kitchen, challenging themselves on the woodland swing and ladder, and using their imagination in the construction area to build and create alongside their friends. These experiences continue to develop their physical skills, creativity, confidence and teamwork through child-led play.

✍️ This week in Explorers, the children have been practising their early writing skills at our Sand Name Writing Station. Using paintbrushes to form letters in sand, they explored the shapes and movements of the letters in their names before progressing to writing simple summer-themed words such as sun, sand and sea. This hands-on activity supported letter recognition, fine motor development and early mark-making in a fun, sensory way.

🧺 In our role play area, the children enjoyed working together to create a Summer Picnic. They took turns laying out picnic blankets, choosing pretend food and serving one another while chatting about their favourite foods and summer experiences. Through this activity, the children developed their communication skills, learned to cooperate with friends, and practised sharing, taking turns and including others in their imaginative play.

🌞 The children have also had a fantastic time making the most of our outdoor environment. They have loved spending time in the construction area, using tyres, bricks and pieces of wood to design and build their own imaginative masterpieces to support their role play. They have also had great fun climbing trees, playing football with their friends, and exploring the ride-on toys, developing their physical skills, confidence, creativity and teamwork through child-led play.

🐦🌿 This week in Discovery...

This week, our Discovery children have been enjoying activities inspired by our core book, A Busy Day for Birds. They have been practising their early maths skills by counting colourful birds up to five and matching them to the correct number cards, carefully touching each bird as they counted to develop one-to-one correspondence. The children also loved taking part in our Feed the Baby Birds activity, taking turns to feed the hungry birds while learning to share resources and use simple phrases such as "my turn," "your turn" and "share."
We've also been making the most of the beautiful summer weather in our woodland! The children have had lots of fun exploring outdoors, riding on our wheeled resources, cooling off with water play and getting creative with our brand-new sand, digging, building and filling containers. It has been wonderful to see so much laughter, exploration and imaginative play throughout the week. ☀️💦🌳

🐻✏️ This week in Explorers...

Our Explorers have been building their teamwork and school readiness through a range of exciting activities.
The children loved taking part in our Bear Hunt Team Adventure, working together to overcome obstacles, solve simple problems and encourage one another as they searched for the bear. They demonstrated fantastic communication, took turns, shared ideas and celebrated each other's successes along the way.
We have also been practising writing our names on graduation certificates, helping to develop pencil control, correct letter formation and confidence in independent writing as the children prepare for their next exciting chapter at school.
We've also been making the most of the glorious summer sunshine in our woodland. The children have enjoyed caring for our nature garden by watering plants, checking on our flowers and trees, and exploring the changes taking place in our outdoor environment. They loved observing wildlife, talking about what they could see and hear, and taking pride in looking after the natural world around them. Spending time outdoors has been a wonderful way to develop their understanding of nature while enjoying fresh air, movement and the beauty of the season. ☀️🌿🌳

🌞 This week at Whitchurch Montessori... 🌿🐞

As we come to the end of another wonderful month, our team have been busy wrapping up June's learning experiences and preparing the environment ready to welcome an exciting new theme next week – Summer! 🌼🌳 We can't wait to begin a brand-new adventure filled with sunshine, nature and endless opportunities for discovery.

In Discovery, the children have loved learning all about mini beasts. They enjoyed copying their teachers' movements as they wriggled like worms, crawled like beetles and fluttered like butterflies, developing their listening skills, coordination and imagination through movement. The children also had great fun singing "Five Little Slugs on the Garden Lawn,"carefully counting each slug as they disappeared, building confidence with early number skills while joining in with familiar words and actions.

Our Explorers have continued developing their independence and early literacy by practising writing their own names using their personalised name pencils, showing growing confidence with letter formation and recognition. They also enjoyed an exciting mini beast number hunt, throwing beanbags onto the correct numbers as they counted, recognised numerals and celebrated their successes together. Alongside this, the children have taken great pride in caring for their garden, watering plants and observing how nature changes, before heading into the forest to continue their daily adventures, exploring, creating and learning together outdoors. 🌱🍃
