⚓ FRIDAY ON THE FLEET! 🌊🎣

There’s more than one way to shoot a fleet of pots, and the best way to learn is to get out there and do it!

In this week’s video, our Training Coordinator Jay is aboard one of our collaborator’s vessels, showing how every boat has its own methods of setting gear. From the way the gear is prepared to how it’s shot away, every skipper has their own approach.

That’s exactly why hands-on learning is so important at 54 North. Getting our students out on working fishing vessels gives them the chance to see different techniques, learn from experienced skippers and build the practical skills they’ll need in the industry. 💪

Because there’s no substitute for learning from the people who do it for a living!

Our newest Diploma students have spent today aboard the North Eastern Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority patrol vessel, gaining a fantastic insight into the work that goes on behind the scenes to support and protect our fishing industry. 🌊

A huge thank you to the team at NEIFCA for the tour, sharing your knowledge and giving our students a valuable look at the vital role you play in the future of our industry. 👏

🌅 Is summer finally over? 🦞🌊

The mornings are getting darker, the sunrises are getting later, and the starts are getting a little more challenging! 😂

There’s something special about being out on the water before the rest of the world wakes up, watching the sun come up as another fleet of pots goes over the side.

But here’s the question… could you hack those colder mornings, early starts and life at sea? 💪

Commercial fishing isn’t your typical 9–5, but for those who love the sea, enjoy working outdoors and want a career that’s anything but ordinary, it could be the start of something special.

⚓️ THE NEXT GENERATION TAKING THE REINS! 🎣

Fantastic to see Whitby’s Amanda M out on the North Sea, with skipper, dad and boss Mike handing over the reins to the next generation — even if it was only for one fleet! 😂

It’s brilliant to see a fishing family out there learning the ropes and continuing the tradition. George certainly looks like he’s enjoying himself… Mike, you’d better not get too comfy in that wheelhouse — it looks like he’s already got his eye on your chair! 😂🧑‍✈️

At 54 North, our students aren’t just learning about the fishing industry — they’re learning from people who live and work in it. 🌊

Our instructors come directly from the fishing industry, with our own skippers and vessel owners bringing real-life experience into the training room and out on the water.

And it’s not just about learning how to fish — it’s about understanding why we do things the way we do.

🏠 HOME SWEET HOME! ⚓️

After 3 months at sea, the Kirkella is finally home — and today our students were there to welcome one of our own back! 👏

It’s been a challenging three months at sea, packed with experience, hard work and plenty of lessons along the way. This trip marks the final trip before successfully completing the course — a fantastic achievement and something to be incredibly proud of. 🎓🌊

A huge CONGRATULATIONS on a successful trip! 👏

And a massive thank you to the Great British Fish Team and the entire crew of the Kirkella for providing such an incredible opportunity and supporting the next generation of fishermen and women. ⚓️🐟

The experience gained at sea is invaluable — and we’re already looking forward to the next trip! 🌊

🚢 FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE FISHING GROUNDS — RHYS IS GETTING STUCK IN! 🎣

Rhys joined us in July and has already taken the next step in his fishing journey, recently joining Pots of Plenty in Scarborough.

It’s fantastic to see Rhys putting his learning into practice, gaining valuable experience and getting stuck into life at sea. He’s thoroughly enjoying his time aboard and learning something new every day.

A huge thank you to Pots of Plenty for the incredible support they continue to provide to our school and the wider fishing industry. Partnerships like this are so important in giving the next generation the opportunity to learn, develop and build a future within our industry. 👏

🌊 WHEN THE WEATHER TURNS, THE REAL LESSONS BEGIN… ⚓️

We’re back with Jayden aboard the Kirkella, somewhere in the North Atlantic.

With every day at sea comes another lesson. Another watch, another decision, another bit of knowledge and experience gained.

And as the wind picks up and the weather starts to deteriorate, those lessons become even more valuable. 🌊💨

Because there are some things you simply can’t learn in a classroom. You learn them by being out there, watching, listening, adapting and experiencing it for yourself.

Day by day, Jayden is building the knowledge and experience that will stay with him throughout his career.

The classroom just got bigger. 🌊⚓️

😂 “SO MUCH ROOM FOR ACTIVITIES!”

Taylor has been keeping busy aboard Our Henry II, getting stuck into life on one of Whitby’s biggest potting boats.

From handling some cracking lobsters 🦞 — including an unusual blue one 💙 (cue the “blue lobsters aren’t rare” comments… 😂) — to coming face-to-face with a conger eel, it’s certainly been an interesting time on the deck!

But it’s also a great example of the opportunities available to our students — getting out on the water, experiencing the commercial fishing industry first-hand and learning from those already working in it.

Because sometimes the best way to learn is to get stuck in and experience it for yourself. 🎣🌊
