☀️🌼 Summer invitations to play 🌊🐚

We've been making the most of the sunshine with this summer-themed invitation to play, combining flowers, the seaside and a little bit of light exploration.

The flower matching discs encouraged conversations about the different wildflowers we might spot on our walks, while the seaside tray sparked lots of imaginative play with sea creatures and beach adventures.

One of the biggest highlights was seeing the children hold the acrylic sea creature sensory blocks up to the sunshine. They were fascinated by the colourful reflections shining through and loved exploring how the light changed as they moved the pieces around. Simple moments like these are such a lovely way to encourage curiosity and wonder.

🌊Under the Sea small world play 🐢

Today I set up an ocean-themed tuff tray inspired by some recent beach trips and the children’s growing interest in sea creatures. We explored the books together, talked about what we might find under the sea and then the children were free to create their own underwater world.

🥤🍊 Juice Bar! 🍓🍍

Our new Juice Bar resources from Perrys Woodcraft has been such a lovely addition, it's inspired lots of imaginative role play already.

I love how open-ended these resources are. They encourage conversations about healthy foods, colours, counting and problem-solving, while naturally supporting collaborative play.
I'm looking forward to seeing all the different ways this invitation to play continues to evolve over the summer. ☀️🍹

☀️Sea, sun, shells and ice-cream 🍦

Our seasonal shelf has had a little summer refresh, bringing a taste of the seaside into our setting! Living in a beautiful coastal town means many of our children have been spending time at the beach with their families, so it felt like the perfect theme to explore together.
We've been chatting about our local coastline, looking at photos of Weymouth Beach, the Punch and Judy show and the famous sand sculptures, helping children make connections between their own experiences and our play.
The children have especially loved using the felt balls to create colourful ice creams, carefully choosing their favourite "flavours" and practising their counting as they stack the scoops higher and higher! 🍦
Alongside this, we've been exploring a basket of real shells with matching identification cards and books, encouraging curiosity and introducing new vocabulary as we discover the different shells that can be found around our coast.
Our small world beach scene has also sparked lots of imaginative play. The beach hut, lighthouse, stacking sun, ice cream and lolly resources from Perry's woodcraft have been such lovely additions, inviting open-ended play while fitting beautifully into our summer theme.

🌈Our new colour wheel from has definitely been a hit! 🌈

It was lovely to see how different children were drawn to it in different ways. Our younger children, who are showing a real rotation schema, loved spinning the wheel over and over, watching the colours whirl around. Another child was completely fascinated by the colourful reflections across their hands as the sunlight shone through.
As the morning went on, the play naturally evolved. The colour wheel became part of imaginative role play, and later it was used to decide which coloured Duplo brick to build with next. Such a simple idea, but it sparked so much curiosity, conversation and creativity.
I love resources that grow with the children and can be explored in so many different ways. This one has certainly earned its place in our setting!

🌊 Making a splash with ocean-inspired water play! 🐠

With the warmer weather, we've been making the most of lots of water play outdoors in the mornings. This ocean-themed invitation was a huge hit, encouraging plenty of scooping, pouring, filling and imaginative small world play.

The children were especially excited to explore our new acrylic sea creature sensory shapes. They looked beautiful shimmering beneath the water, and sparked lots of curiosity as we talked about the different animals. We learnt some new vocabulary too, with children asking what some of the sea creatures were called and discovering words like lobster, coral and starfish. 🦞⭐

Another favourite was the water pump and stand. There was something so satisfying about pumping the water themselves and watching it flow into their cups and containers. It added a whole new level of purpose to their play, supporting coordination, problem-solving and lots of perseverance.
Sometimes the simplest activities become the richest learning experiences. A tray of water, a few carefully chosen resources and plenty of time to explore is all that's needed.

🦋 Getting ready for our very own butterfly journey! 🦋

I've been sharing some exciting news with the children... next week we'll be welcoming some tiny caterpillars to our setting! 🐛
To help introduce the children to the butterfly life cycle, I set up this simple sensory invitation to play. Through exploring the different textures, scooping, filling and handling the resources, we began talking about how caterpillars grow and change.
We looked at pictures, shared The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and introduced some new vocabulary including caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly. 🦋

🍕 Pizza deliveries and restaurant fun! 🍕

This set from Perry's has been such a brilliant addition to our kitchen area. I've had it out for quite a while now, and it's still one of the most popular resources in the setting!

The children have been busy taking orders, cooking meals, serving customers and making plenty of pizza deliveries.

Role play opportunities like these are fantastic for developing communication skills, imagination, turn-taking and early maths as children count coins, discuss menus and take food orders.
It's always a good sign when a resource continues to inspire play long after it's been introduced, and this one is definitely earning its place on the shelf!
