Hannah Payne Maths Tuition

Hannah Payne Maths Tuition GCSE Maths and A-Level Mathematics Tuition. I provide tuition and guidance for Key Stages 3, 4 + Sessions are typically 1hr or 2hrs.

I have a MMath Master of Mathematics Degree 1st Class Hons from the University of East Anglia and I studied for my PGCE at Cambridge, although I did not become a school teacher. I absolutely love 1-1 work with students, especially seeing confidence grow and mathematical understanding spark! Outside of tutoring I currently work as a facilitator at a self-directed, consent-based education space, whi

ch is wonderful and rewarding work. My approach is consent based - it is important to me that students want to work with me and have their own goals in mind. We will collaborate on which tools/websites to use to fit their needs and I will be realistic in what can be achieved in a given time frame - exam preparation will ideally need months not weeks. I also prioritise students' personal well being in my sessions, as this is not only a personal value, but also the best way to gain confidence and effectively learn. Weekly slots work best for consistency and progress, however I can be flexible depending on availability. I offer in person or online tuition. In person - I will travel up to 15miles for no additional charge, but further than this will incur travel charges starting at £5. I also offer sessions at my home in Wethersfield, Braintree. Online - This will be via Zoom with use of an onscreen whiteboard for demonstrations which will be saved and sent after the session as a pdf. We will also make use of any relevant online learning platforms. A we**am, microphone and quiet area will be required for online sessions. If you're interested in tuition for yourself or your young person, send me a message for availability or further info. Education is a life-long endeavour, so if you are a student over school age don't hesitate to contact me. Accessibility - if you have any additional needs or other relevant information please let me know how I can tailor our sessions and the space to suit your young person's or your needs and I will do my best to provide this for you. Cancellations - sometimes life happens and we need to reschedule. If you need to cancel our session, please do so at least 24hrs before our session to avoid charge:
- before 24hrs --- no charge
- between 24hrs - 2hrs --- half the session fee will be added to the following session
- within 2hrs of session start/no show --- full session fee added to following session
If I need to cancel one of our sessions I will let you know as soon as possible and attempt to rearrange for the same week.

Trying to board game with cats 🐈 🤦🤣

This is such an excellent game series.
We’ve now got Century Golem Edition and Eastern Mountains which are both stand alone games AND can combine!

There is so much strategy in this game which encourages creative and dynamic problem solving.
Plus trading crystals is super fun!

We’ll definitely be checking out more games.

This activity was completely open ended. We emptied out a money tin and interesting questions immediately bubbled up!
What’s this worth? How many ways can we make 2p or 5p etc.? Are they all the ways? How do we know?
Can we put them in order of value, age, size? What other ways can we categorise them?

And most fun: how much money do we have altogether? 🤣

I was reminded of how valuable holding the tangible objects are for making important mathematical connections.

What games are you playing today?

Sushi Go Party! by is a firm favourite in our family because there’s no having to wait your turn and it’s just as good with 2 people as it is with up to 8!

Also…it’s cute sushi for goodness’ sake! 🤭

If you can’t see the Maths relatedness then that’s a good challenge in itself. One thing I notice in this game is that it encourages strategic thinking and quickly comparing the cards’ values, which are not all straightforward.
If you’ve played this game and noticed other maths concepts in the game share in the comments 👇🏻

Today we cheated…

We totally used a calculator when looking to solve this Summer Challenge from NRich.maths.org

This challenge involved completing a times table grid having only been given certain products and only using numbers 2-12, with one repetition.

I absolutely encourage using a calculator when problem solving like this because it allows the solver to explore and make connections without fatiguing on the arithmetic.

Some of the realisations that we had were about square numbers, multiple factor pairs and the commutative property of multiplication.

Guess what…after we solved the problem we completed the grid without using a calculator! This was a special and satisfying moment for the problem solver 😊

Have you ever made your own board/dice game?

Today we invented a fun dice game to practice the four operations ➕➖✖️➗

You need: two dice 1-6, a score board

The objective: be the first to get exactly 100!

The rules: roll both dice. Choose to add, subtract, multiply or divide the numbers. Add your total to your score.
*Wild card* if you roll a double you get to multiply that number by 10, e.g. double 5s mean add 50 to your score.
When you get over 100 you can subtract your dice score to get exactly to 100.

We used the multi link cubes to help with multiplication and division. And also finding visual patterns just for fun.

Questions that came up: how can we make the biggest number? Is multiplying always the best option? How many ways can we make 1?

Next time we will use 100 squares and 10s and 1s to keep score visually.

*I’m a secondary tutor but also do home ed sessions that are more fluid in terms of age, curriculum and need*

Hi folks!
I’m H, and I love Maths!
But not everyone does, and that’s ok.
I’m here for your Mathsy needs whether you love maths, like some parts of it, or would rather you didn’t have to do it at all!

My love for Maths didn’t start from the beginning and school experiences had a lot to do with that. It can be daunting and full of pressure that leaves us thinking we can only be either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ at Maths.

The reality is far more complex and fluid. And how we experience Maths can have a lot to do with the environment in which we learn it and our potential can become replaced by anxiety and dislike.
My first objective with new tutees is to reduce pressure and anxiety, build confidence and then help folks understand their own goals.

My other love is Gaming! And I often bring my love for computer games, board games and puzzles into our sessions to give our problem solving and reasoning skills a workout.

If you need a supportive and tailored approach to learning or improving Maths at any level (KS3+) please get in touch.

H xx

Broken Calculator!
Can you make these numbers from the buttons left on this calculator? 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20
For an extra challenge, how many ways are there of making 12 using only these buttons?
[Problem and image taken from mathsisfun.com]

Pair them up!

40, 5, 8, 24, 3, 10, 15, 12

These numbers can be paired up so that each pair has the same product.
Which number is the pair for 10? Comment with your answer below.

[A product is the numbers multiplied together, e.g. the product of 2 & 3 is 6.]

This problem was adapted from an activity from Nrich Maths.
