Train anywhere in the world!

Shotokan karate is the most popular style of karate in the world! Wherever you are you are never very far from a Shotokan karate club!

The Karate Union of Great Britain is a great organisation which has many member clubs throughout the UK.

Here is Seb, who is training hard towards his Black belt, training last week with a Shotokan club in Merthyr Tydfill where he found himself for a short period.

The popularity of Shotokan means that you can continue your karate if you find yourself moving out of the Wetherby area – going off to University, for example, or changing jobs.

Have you always fancied trying a martial art but felt you have missed your chance?

Karate is ideal for the more ‘mature’ students as there is no throwing or grappling on the ground. All the techniques we teach can be safely practiced way into so called ‘old age’. Our instructor is in his 60’s and so are quite a few of our students!

Karate is the ideal activity for the people in their twilight years for a number of reasons:

Karate allows people to work at their own pace. There is never pressure to keep up.
Karate is a low impact activity that works every muscle and bone in the body.
Karate trains both the body and mind.
Karate offers a journey for all participants to embark on.
There is always reason for every person to learn self-defence.

MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND IMPROVE CONFIDENCE!

At WKC we take children from 7 years old. The way we teach karate in a supportive group setting enable children to make many new friends and helps build self confidence. This is especially so for children who perhaps do not ‘fit in’ with team sports.
How Karate Helps Children Build Self-Confidence

Karate is the ideal sport for children for building self-confidence, balance, coordination, discipline and social skills. Karate has the ability to make your children stronger, from the inside out. How it can help:

Self-confidence
Mastering the various martial arts techniques is no easy feat and can work wonders for a child’s confidence levels. When a child reaches a new level it gives them a sense of accomplishment that is vital for their self-esteem and mental development.

Discipline
Martial arts are ideal for instilling a sense of discipline in a child in a number of ways. Firstly, it gives them emotional control and allows them to set personal boundaries. A

Decision-making
Success is often the result of good decision-making – and martial arts are useful for helping a child develop their decision-making skills.

Respect
Martial arts demand the highest levels of mutual respect among their practitioners. From the minute a child walks into a dojo, they must follow strict social etiquette when interacting with their instructors and their peers.

Focus
The complexity of martial arts systems means that a great deal of teaching is required before they are put into practice. As such, listening and concentration skills are put to the test when it comes to mastering martial arts. At a young age, a child is likely to have a relatively low attention span. This is why getting them to learn the importance of listening to, remembering and carrying out instructions is essential. There are few better activities than martial arts to help them achieve this, even if they’ve had problems focusing in the past. As an example, karate has been proven to alleviate the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Social skills
Throughout their lives, children will find themselves in unfamiliar environments among people they don’t know. Therefore, taking part in martial arts training as part of a group prepares them for this challenge.

ARE YOU TOO OLD TO TRY SOMETHING NEW AND EXCITING?

Would you be interested in taking up a pastime that combines the building blocks for physical health and longevity with a cognitive boost, mental and emotional wellbeing benefits, and a focus on the values of humility, mutual respect and self-confidence? Karate maybe?
Some people consider themselves ‘too old’ even in their 50s but at Wetherby Karate Club we have lots of students in their 50s and some in their 60s. Our instructor, Sensei Martin, is the very young age of 65!
Why not come down for a free no obligation Taster session?
Karate is a wonderful cardio workout. It raises your heart rate and oxygen levels and also improves your coordination and muscle condition, endurance and stamina, balance, mobility, flexibility and strength. In fact everything we need physically if we want to grow old disgracefully!
But karate also has myriad mental benefits. There is a focus on concentration which aids cognitive function and mental clarity. It is wonderful for regaining the self confidence and self belief you had in your youth. Add to that the fact that at Wetherby Karate Club you will also be surrounded by a supportive tribe of ages and it really does tick all the boxes.
At the core of karate are the values of honour, respect, tradition and altruism – these are inherently connected to the nature of the art. Some of us older folk may feel that these values are a thing of the past – long lost in the busy ‘me me me’ modern world but at Wetherby Karate Club we celebrate these virtues and insist on them within the dojo – no matter what age the student.
Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what Andrew, one of our more mature students, has to say :
“The age of 61 could be thought of by some, as a strange time to take up the art of Shotokan Karate but that is where I am and I am nicely progressing my way through the grades under Martin’s instruction. I am thoroughly enjoying training up to three times a week at Wetherby Town Hall.
It’s great for both mental and physical discipline and to have a goal to aim for and the bonus is I’ve met a whole new circle of friends too.”
Andrew, Towton.
If all this sounds good why not give karate a go. A warm welcome awaits you.

Calling all ‘Young At Heart’ in Wetherby

Starting Wednesday 2nd September, I am running a 3 week course of introductory Shotokan Karate for ladies and gents over 60.

All the sessions (up to 3 a week) will take place at 2-00 in the afternoon at the Town Hall.

The cost is £40 for 8 sessions – so £5 a lesson!

This is an opportunity to try something different, to improve your fitness/mobility and to increase your circle of friends.

You don’t have to have done any karate before and you don’t have to be fit. Just have an open mind.

I’m not particularly comfortable on social media – I would much rather have a chat on the phone or meet for a coffee – I’m a bit old fashioned like that!

For more information give me a call or drop me a text on 07753 244 638.

Here’s what 3 of our members in their 60s and 70s think about the karate I offer:

“My fitness has improved so much since joining, a great club with some great people, I am 76 and don’t feel out of place, come on you oldies!”
Ken

“I started karate with Martin 3 years ago at the age of 62. I’d never considered doing it before – and I’m loving it! It gives me an hour away from ‘real life’ – a chance to recharge and reset after a hectic day”
Alison

“We are going through some challenging health issues in the family at the moment and I have found it very hard to deal with. Wetherby Karate Club has been a lifeline for me personally. It’s a place for some “me time” a place where I can be myself and shut off from everything outside the dojo. Mentally I feel better equipped to keep going and as a bonus, I’m actually losing weight”
You’ve nothing to lose by giving it a go and plenty to gain. Get in touch with Martin, you won’t regret it’
Ian

I could go on and on about the benefits but I would prefer to have a chat so get in touch we me on 07753 244 638

A BIG THANK YOU!

As any karate club expands, it becomes very important to maintain a good level of instruction for all members. This becomes increasingly difficult as all members are individuals with individual needs as well as those associated with their belt level.

At WKC we are very lucky to have 2 junior instructors whose help and assistance is invaluable. Both Will and Duncan have been with the club since we opened in 2023 and started with us as White belts.

There are several more students approaching Black belt. Whilst all these may not wish to instruct that option is available for discussion and it proves an great way of helping to pass on the art.

Not everyone who starts their karate journey gets to Black belt but at WKC we firmly believe that it is within everyone’s grasp if that hard work is put in.

In the meantime we are very grateful to Will and Duncan for their continued support of the club.
