We’re delighted to tell you that the Summer Reading Challenge is happening in North Somerset Libraries, and we’re inviting under 4s to join in too! The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to encourage children and adults to share stories together and develop a lifelong reading habit and love for books.
The main challenge is aimed at 4-11 years olds, and this year again we have a special challenge for under 4s and their grown-ups to complete together, with a sparkly sticker medal and certificate at the end.
Our exciting partnership with Universal Music Group UK will open doors for children to explore the creative power of reading and music. The link between music and storytelling runs deep. Think rhythm, self-expression, and creativity. Children will have the opportunity to hear from inspiring musicians at the top of their game, championing the joy of reading.
The official Read to the Beat Collection includes books about musicians, characters discovering music, sound science, cultural traditions, rhythm, storytelling through sound, breaking down barriers to music, creative expression and following your dreams.
Recent research shows that children’s enjoyment and engagement in reading is in decline, despite research from the OECD showing that reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more important than either parents’ educational background or household income. The Summer Reading Challenge supports children to get excited about reading throughout the summer, building an ongoing love for reading.
· It’s totally free to take part.
· Children can sign up in North Somerset Libraries from Saturday 4 July
· If they “read” any 6 library books of their choice, they will collect a sticker per book for their challenge folder.
· If they complete the challenge by Saturday 12 September, they will receive a certificate and sticker medal while stocks last.
The Summer Reading Challenge:
· Significantly improves reading enjoyment and independence.
· Ensures children starting school are ready for a successful transition into school.
· Contributes to all children’s achievement.
· Encourages extra-curricular activity – encouraging family engagement with reading.
· Develops links between your setting, the library and the wider community.
Read to the Beat will feature amazing books, awesome rewards, and plenty of fun for everyone!
