AUDITION NOTICE - THE VALENTINE LETTERS

Wednesday 9th September – 7.00 pm – Wharf Theatre Foyer.

Steve Darlow’s ‘The Valentine Letters ’
Director - Abigail Newton

Performance dates: Monday 25th January - Saturday 30th January 2027

Characters

John - RAF bomber, Ursula's husband Aged 25-35
Ursula - John’s wife Aged 25-35
Frances - John and Ursula’s daughter, acting as narrator and go between of the separate scenes of John and Ursula Aged 35-55

The play is based upon the second world war correspondence between RAF bomber command navigator and prisoner of war John Valentine and his wife Ursula. The letters and postcards provide a unique and unprecedented insight into how two people struggled to find solace and keep their hopes and love alive despite the anxieties of John’s dangerous operational life, his three years behind barbed wire, and Ursula’s endeavours raising a new born under the constant threat of aerial attack. And how John's health deteriorated, returning a different man to the one Ursula first knew and fell in love with.
