Hello to all the new followers! Writing this has made me feel very connected to my own beliefs. Even before birth work I worked with women helping them feel more confident and empowered. These beliefs are woven through from pregnancy to motherhood and beyond. It’s the reason I wanted to start a supportive group that ended up being The Village | Pregnancy & Postnatal Support | Community because without that gentle holding, how is one going to grow their self confidence?

It’s where you get to arrive as you are with no pressure to be good or for your baby to be good. We welcome you both just as you are. This week many of my students have been talking about their experiences with the breath. How they have noticed how deep physical tension runs, how it’s psychological. Some noticed the effort to exhale effectively, the body holding on to something. When I sat here to breathe, after a while my body needed to breathe out longer exhales through the mouth. When I exercise I feel lactic acid building up in my muscles but I breathe through it (up breathing is amazing!) and my body and mind softens. I talk about the breath in my pregnancy yogalates classes- it’s the most powerful tool you will have to keep the mind and body calm. When there is tension, it snowballs into pain then fear of the experience. This is how deep the breath can affect us, not just physically or emotionally but psychologically - how it is to be present and experience life.

Our grandparents probably pottied our children from toddler age or earlier and somehow that intel has been lost since the invention of disposable nappies in the early 80s. Cleaning cloth nappies was arduous and disposables gave back time the mums were desperate for. The problem is they take away the necessary learnings needed to know when your child needs a wee or a poo, children are being pottied later, there’s problems along the way, you start and then stop only to find your child isn’t ready. Imagine telling your child to start crawling right away or to eat 3 meals a day. It takes time to lean a new skill and anyone telling you your 2 year old can be pottied in days is probably not telling the truth.
