Number line subtraction - no problem! ✅⭐️

This littler learner was flying through the calculations tonight (independently)! Addition & subtraction within 20 using a number line for support..

How did we achieve this?
⭐️ Teach the method - how to use/ navigate the number line
⭐️ Explain the vocabulary - take away, subtract, count backwards, less than, fewer…
⭐️ Model examples - show them repeatedly, talking through your thinking out loud as you demonstrate
⭐️ Let them apply & practise - LOTS! Regularly come back to this method to ensure it’s embedded, as well as learning new strategies

If you don’t have access to a number line like this one, you can use a ruler in exactly the same way or print & laminate one to make it wipeable 😊🪄 putting one inside a plastic wallet also works too! *using a whiteboard marker 🖊️

Example lesson set up ✏️⭐️🌈

What can you expect to see in one of my tutoring lessons? Here’s an example of a recent lesson for a Year 2 pupil:

✅ Exercise book - I provide these for every pupil and depending on their learning style sometimes we use them a lot and sometimes barely at all!
✅ Playdough - great fine motor warm up before handwriting.
✅ Pot of random tools inc. tweezers, marbles, golf tees, rubber bands - all for fine motor games!
✅ Whiteboard pens - excellent way to encourage reluctant writers to ‘have a go!’ as they can easily be rubbed away.
✅ Letter stampers - it’s a fun, colourful way to encourage spelling without having to write.
✅ Wipeable number lines - relieving that fear of permanence, try and try again until you like your answer. Also only shows one question at a time, rather than being overwhelmed with too many on a page.
✅ Practical games - in this case ‘Match & Spell’ by which is a favourite phonics activity. I use toys and games whenever I can to help with engagement and motivation.
✅ School homework book - let’s get as many jobs ticked off as we can! It’s often far less stressful for me to tackle home learning and many parents appreciate the break.
✅ Pupil’s folder - containing all of the work we do together, bespoke resources I either make or source for each child, assessments, reading books we’re enjoying and all the crafts we make!
✅ Super hardworking pupil ✍🏼⭐️ - I’m lucky I get to work with some amazing children who are making the most incredible progress! 👏🏼

EVERY lesson of mine looks different - the structure, the content, the delivery, the methods I use, the resources I take… because every little learner is different! This makes me so happy 💛😊

I recently asked some of the parents I’m working with to complete a satisfaction survey/ feedback form so that I could reflect on my practice as a tutor & make improvements to the services I provide.

I think it’s really important to take time to reflect and evaluate, particularly as a new small business. I really appreciate the time and effort people went to to give such considered and kind responses.

The positive comments have given me such a lift! Ultimately, we all like to know we’re doing a good job, so that’s nice 🫶🏼 but it gives me such a feeling of reward and satisfaction that I’m making a positive difference to the little learners I get to work with. My goal was always to help children love learning, enjoy their early education and see how magical it can be when you open doors to knowledge and skills they didn’t know they had.

I’m going into the new year with lots of kind words buzzing around my head, feeling inspired and motivated to keep learning, developing and improving in my new (ish!) role. ‘Every day is a school day!’ so they say… ✨🌈✏️📚

💥 Number bonds to 🔟💥

A fundamental concept for children in early maths & crucial to understanding addition and subtraction further down the line.

When we talk about number bonds to ten, we are referring to two numbers that total ten:
0 + 10
1 + 9
2 + 8
3 + 7
4 + 6
5 + 5

It is really important to start working on number bonds from as early as Reception! Lots of repetitive fluency work, reciting them and recalling them in lots of different ways will help to deepen your little one’s understanding. In these pictures you can see a few different methods I like to use:

1. A fantastic puzzle from to include a level of problem solving & logic as well!
2. ‘Ten frames’ (the 5x2 grids) are used to visually represent combinations totalling 10 with pictures/ dots/ counters. In this case pumpkins! Thank you 🎃
3. ‘Part whole models’ which show the whole (10) and it’s two component parts (E.g 1 and 9).
4. Interactive games such as ‘Hit the Button’ by Topmarks Online

Ladybird doubles! 🐞🎨🖌️

One of my maths lessons this week was all about doubling numbers within 20. We used the ‘magic rule’ about ladybird spots to remember that whatever number we have on one side we must keep it the same on the other.
We used cotton buds for painting the spots (fantastic fine motor activity!) and explored the concept of multiplying by 2/ doubling.
These little learners were amazing and soon picked up the new mathematical concept in a really fun way. Within a few minutes they were confidently completing sentences that said ‘double __ is __’ independently.

A great one to try at home if you have children in Reception or KS1 😊

Lessons lately… ✏️📚🎲✨

Sorry it’s been quiet for a while, life has been BUSY! Since filling all of my tutoring slots (yay!! ☺️👏🏼) the weeks fly by as I head from lesson to lesson and often forget to take pictures!

Here’s a mix of resources and practical learning strategies I’ve used over the last few weeks with learners from Year 1-4. The progress the children are making week on week is an absolute JOY and pleasure to see ✨ I’ve had so many lovely comments from parents who are noticing positive changes in their little ones and that makes the job so rewarding 🥰

Letters & sounds… as simple as A, B, C?! 🔡✏️🌈

Nope, absolutely not! 😂

Here are a few ways we categorise letters & sounds to help our children learn to read and spell.

Some key principles/ terminology to remember:

⭐️ a single sound = phoneme
⭐️ the letters used to represent a sound = grapheme
⭐️ digraph = 2 letters making 1 sound
⭐️ trigraph = 3 letters making 1 sound
⭐️ split digraphs = a digraph that is not adjacent, it has a letter in between
⭐️ consonant clusters = a blend of adjacent consonants commonly used together
⭐️ remember: vowel and consonant sounds can be made with multiple letters

And, YES, your child will be using this kind of terminology at school from the age of 4/5! We always use the correct names such as ‘digraph’ even with our youngest learners 😊.

If you have any word building games such as magnetic letters at home it’s a great idea to organise them into their groups when you store them. This makes playing the game much easier and quicker! It also helps your little one embed strong strategies for reading and spelling by understanding how words are put together. Knowing the rules early on is a fantastic foundation as the words get more difficult as they progress through Key Stage 1 and 2.

Tin Can Alley MATHS! 🎳⭐️

Today we played a game to recap our number bonds to 10 using subtraction. On a whiteboard we recorded each throw using a number sentence 10 - ? = ?

We always started with 10 cans. The first (?) number is how many you knock down, the answer is how many are still standing!

The more confident your little learner becomes with number bonds to 10, the quicker the calculation happens as the bonds are more familiar & the less support they’ll need to record their working.

A brilliant one to take outside whilst the weather is so beautiful! ☀️
