Planned changes to the rider theory test
From 29 October 2026, DVSA will be updating the rider theory test to make it more accessible and bring it in line with the car theory test.

What’s changing
Theory tests are made up of 2 parts:

50 multiple choice questions
hazard perception clips
Within the multiple-choice section there are written case studies with 5 accompanying questions. From 29 October 2026, the case studies will be replaced with a video clip. Learner riders will be asked 3 questions based on the short video clip.

The change will make the theory test more accessible, especially for people who are neurodivergent (people with Dyslexia and Autism, or similar learning differences).

The pass mark, number of questions and content that learner riders need to know will stay the same.

Preparing for the change
To help your pupils prepare for the change our official learning materials have been updated and now include revision questions using the new video clip format.

These can be accessed on the Safe Driving for Life website.
