'How America Saved the English Language'
Thursday, 17th September, 2015

SUMMARY Dr Murphy examines attitudes, beliefs and, most importantly, facts about British and American Englishes. Which country gets English 'right'? Are British speakers becoming more American? Are American speakers becoming more British? (Should we care?) Which of our common beliefs about English are correct and which are balderdash and piffle?

Lynne Murphy is Reader in Linguistics at Sussex University. Her alter-ego Lynneguist writes the Separated by a Common Language blog and her Twitter feed offers a "Difference of the Day" between American and British English.

The Whistler Libel Trial, Speaker: Dr Prasannajit De Silva

Summary: J. A. M. Whistler was a cosmopolitan figure, who, from the 1860s, became a key player in the Aesthetic Movement in Victorian Britain. This lecture will consider examples of his work from across his career, focusing on the famous trial in which he sued the art critic John Ruskin for libel and the trial's significance for ideas of modern art.
Prasannajit da Silva is an art historian whose particular interests include British art of the 18th and 19th centuries, especially in colonial contexts. His research concentrates on aspects of the work of British artists in India during this time period. He is an Associate Tutor at the University of Sussex, an Associate Lecturer at Birkbeck (University of London) and Tutor for the WEA.

Exciting News for Bedford Culture Club’s April talk!

The talk will be filmed for the world-politics series of The World Today with Tariq Ali*. They are making a short culture film about Huw Wahl’s documentary ‘To Hell With Culture’ and will interview on camera the evening’s presenter, Michael Paraskos, as well as willing members of the audience.

To celebrate this unique event in the life of the BCC, tickets will be £7.00.

A recent film (2014), 'To Hell With Culture' takes its provocative title from an essay by Herbert Read. In this film Huw Wahl explores the life and legacy of Read -- poet, art critic and anarchist described as the most significant writer on modern art in the twentieth century.

Thursday 16 April 7-9pm at the Bedford Pub Station Rd HorshamFILM: TO HELL WITH CULTURE
In this film Huw Wahl explores the life and legacy of Herbert Read, the poet, art critic and anarchist described as the most significant writer on modern art in the twentieth century. A close friend of Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and T.S. Eliot, Read helped to shape how we came to see modern art and literature. In the film Wahl interviews those who knew Read and a new generation of artists and writers influenced by his promotion of an anarchist approach to art and life. The film will be introduced by Dr Michael Paraskos of the University of London who is author of several books on Herbert Read, including Herbert Read: Art and Idealism (Orage Press, 2014).

The Chindits 1942-45: Taking the Fight to the Japanese

Speaker: Dylan D'Arch

Using unconventional methods the Chindits (a special force in the regular army) penetrated deep into the jungles of Burma, operating deep behind enemy lines with the aim of disrupting enemy lines of communication, collecting intelligence, attacking enemy bases and diverting enemy troops from other tasks. Dylan D'Arch looks at the Chindits from formation to disbandment with special focus on Operations Longcloth (1943), Thursday (1944) and the debate on their contribution to war in Burma.

Dylan will also talk about Brigade 77, a new brigade being formed. Using modern-day unconventional tactics of combatting terrorism via Facebook and Twitter, Brigade 77 have been named the Chindits in honour of the original force. They will also adopt a similar insignia.

The Bedford Culture Club invites you to its November talk
'In Montmartre’
Speaker: Sue Roe
Sue Roe is author of the recently published book, In Montmartre: Picasso, Matisse and Modernism in Paris 1900-1910. The book was the Radio 4 Book of the Week in early August this year. Sue’s talk promises to bring to life vividly the world of art in Paris in the early 20th Century.
In Montmartre is published by Fig Tree, an imprint of Penguin Books ISBN 978-1-905-490868. If you bring a copy to the talk Sue will be happy to sign it on the night.
