The 5 Voices

The 5 Voices The 5 Voices is a teacher training programme that aims to improve behaviour management and teaching

A Voice Training model for Education

At its core the 5voices is about identifying and learning to execute different tones of voice, which help create an effective teaching and learning environment in the classroom. When teachers use their voices effectively students process information more quickly and classroom behaviour is better. In the training teachers practise varying their voices to suit d

ifferent teaching situations using specific vocal techniques. Teachers are also introduced to the basic vocal techniques of postural alignment, breath support, resonance and articulation as well as the more advanced vocal delivery skills: pace, pitch, rhythm, intonation and inflection. The result of which is having a voice that is not only more authoritative and interesting to listen to, but is healthy, strong and flexible - a voice that will support them throughout their teaching careers.

Teachers need to know this too!

An image showing the top of the lungs in relation to the collarbone.  1.) Your whole body is your instrument, not your just your vocal mechanism. Your voice is part of a total system which includes your mind and your entire body. Any method or technique of singing that doesn’t address the total mind…

Teachers can get stuck in one voice for the majority of the day, often Firm Voice. This can wear your voice out. Learn to vary your voice.

As a speech and language therapist working in voice disorders, my caseload is full of teachers struggling with failing voices. When applying for this study day I was hoping to learn a new technique for use with tricky cases unresponsive to the usual techniques. The 5 Main Voices for effective communication gave me far more than that. I discovered a whole framework that has transformed my approach to working, not only with teachers, but a wide range of clients.

Since Sharing this framework with teachers in my clinic, they have described a penny drop moment when they identify being stuck in one voice for the majority of the day.- Often Firm Voice. The easily recognise that children get desensitized to one voice and its communicative power is lost. Some teachers have described the the relief, both physical and emotional, of freeing themselves from constant use of a firm voice and exploring other voices. They have also commented on the improved pupil behaviour that has ensued.

Ofsted 2016 on the 5voices:

A distinctive element of the course is the mandatory voice training, which encourages trainees to control and adapt their voice effectively for different purposes. Inspectors commented particularly on how calm, controlled and positive all trainees and NQTs were when managing potentially challenging pupils or situations
