A brilliant day out for 26 of our Year 13 Health and Social Care students at the Emergency Services Show at the NEC.

Students gained a first-hand insight into the technology shaping the future of emergency care, including:

• Robotic responders that move quickly and remain stable across difficult terrain, fitting into tight spaces to reach casualties faster.
• Zero-emission electric ambulances adapted to improve trauma response.
• VR simulations used to train army combat medics to deliver first aid for severe trauma.
• Innovative new methods for stopping internal bleeding.
• Robotic machines capable of performing CPR.
• Live demonstrations of trauma treatment and emerging healthcare technologies.

A fantastic opportunity to explore real-world careers and innovation in healthcare. Well done to all the students involved.

On 21 September, a group of our students successfully completed the presentation element of their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award expedition.

As part of the challenge, students planned and agreed a mini project before their expedition, gathered evidence along the way, and then presented their findings afterwards. Their chosen project involved creating an A-Z of their expedition, capturing photographs and researching topics linked to what they discovered on their journey, from the impact of sheep grazing to the characteristics of the Elder tree.

We were incredibly impressed by the professionalism, confidence and enthusiasm shown in every presentation.

Congratulations to all students involved. We are delighted to sign off this element of their Gold Award and look forward to seeing them continue their Duke of Edinburgh journey.

This week we launched our Oracy Workshops. A full lesson designed to help our students build the speaking skills they need to become confident, effective communicators and give them a speaking qualification, certified by the English Speaking Board.

One activity focused on breaking down the basics of active listening, while in another, students wrote about something they enjoy and then answered questions on the topic.

We're looking forward to seeing our students' reading and oracy skills develop, and to watching just how much they grow from here.

Taking 14 students to the PGA BMW Pro-Am at Wentworth was an incredible experience and one they’ll never forget. They had the opportunity to get up close to some of the world’s best golfers as they teed it up around one of the most iconic courses in the game, while also spotting some huge names from the world of sport and entertainment, including Lando Norris, John Terry, Paddy McGuinness and Gareth Bale. It was a fantastic day of golf, inspiration and unforgettable memories for the students ⛳️🏌️‍♂️

In the coming weeks, we're going to be introducing a new series of videos interviewing teachers and students for short documentaries where we show you more about what makes Sandwell Academy such a special place to be.

We will be going into what is being taught at the time in the chosen subject, the background operations that keep the school running, and the experiences that students have had in their years, from Year 7 who have just arrived, to Year 13 readying themselves for their final exams.

Here are this week’s house scores. Our students have rocketed off in positives, with our first place house Walters already having over 2000 points. Very well done.

Lots of things are still being planned, including our sporting fixtures and our upcoming trip to Alton Towers just to name a couple.

Stay tuned for this week where we will be going into our Oracy workshops and a glimpse at Academy life for our students.
