BathyX Projects

BathyX Projects Bathy X Projects is focussed on scientific CCR diving, safety support and ocean science communication.

It's brand new, with huge enthusiasm for all things underwater.

'Are you diving Port Quin?' Said the man in the carpark. 'On a rebreather? Seems a bit heavy duty.' We had to agree, but it was an excellent day to dive a new CCR, get back in the water, experiment with the Insta 360 and generally have a lovely 100 mins in 7m of water enjoying a lovely, lovely seascape. Coffee and a flapjack to finish - didn't mind if we did! The Insta 360 is a new thing to me - the editing possibilities for story telling are so powerful - this is just a short taster of Port Quin - spoiler alert - now is a great time to enjoy some casually beautiful shore diving. Cheers, Tim

Super pleased to be chatting away here - citizen science, ccr and island hopping the Hebrides! Cheers Tim

It was a spur of the moment project, but totally useful for exploring how divers can use personal camera rigs for citizen science. There are amazing models made with expensive gear - if you don’t stretch to that, you can still contribute and all data is valued! Advice and courses totally available - just pm or email [email protected]. Cheers, Tim

Morning all! Stunning scenic diving awaits! A week has just become free on the excellent MV Clasina. 27th Sept to 2nd Oct is the perfect time to catch Orkney reefs in beautiful, late summer profusion. Obviously this is perfect for eyes wide open tourism and photography, but I do like a bit of citizen science, so there could be chances for some survey, photogrammetry or a Gaussian splat workshops. If this tickles you, then please like and share, pop a comment below or email me at [email protected]. I’m away for the weekend, but will have more details and costs early next week for anyone interested.

Have a great weekend everyone,

Cheers,
Tim

Thanks so much to everyone for the birthday wishes. It’s a BathyX birthday with the Avon MCM100 course at Vobster Quay. Surprise cake from the ever lovely team at Vobster! Let’s see if Bellingham, Kane et al have also got a surprise! Cheers, Tim

Super low tide trip to the beach back in April - a great chance to see the incredible structure of seagrass! The root mat is just such a strong fabric, retaining sediment and providing a foundation for the community above. Of course, the edges are fragile - storm or needless human damage starts an unravelling. In the meantime, enjoy and support your local seagrass - it’s working for you!

An amazing success story - diver sightings really help monitor these crayfish. But please don’t forget to CHECK CLEAN DRY your gear when arriving from other freshwater sites. Crayfish plague could wipe out this success!

Congrats to Ollie Dalton for his Normoxic+ CCR. Skills at Capenwray, then qualifying dives in Easedale Quarry (listed depth 80m!), in the beautiful setting of the Scottish West Coast. Various schedules conspired to frustrate boat dives, especially given the flat calm conditions, but this was a suitable finale to a focussed performance from Ollie. He is set to enjoy the rewards of his effort with some great dives.

It's also the last RedBare course for me - I've seen everyone I have trained through to the level they wanted from their RedBare CCR. There are a few reflections on 11 years of RedSeries diving to come, but today the credit belongs to Ollie for his achievement.

Cheers, Tim

Student time again: Many thanks to Marcus 3dmb for time with his ROV spread. A very thorough two days acquainting with preparing and flying ROV. This is especially interesting for survey diver support and monitoring - another piece in the jigsaw of using modern tech to move scientific diving forwards.
