The wind department were delighted to welcome Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Saxophone Tutor Andrew Somerville to Wells on Tuesday to give a masterclass to saxophone students and the senior wind ensemble. Andrew is a renowned performer who plays with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Scottish Ballet and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra among others. He also teaches at St Mary’s School, Edinburgh and is a Selmer Paris Artist.

Yesterday we were delighted to welcome Jess Gillam back to Wells Cathedral School as part of the Maestro Series, joined by Zeynep Özsuca (piano) and Sam Becker (double bass) for a remarkable day of music-making.

The day began with a public masterclass, where three of our pupils had the opportunity to perform and work alongside Jess, gaining invaluable insight from one of the most distinctive and celebrated musicians of her generation.

In the evening, Cedars Hall hosted the sold out concert. Blending classical, folk and jazz influences with extraordinary artistry and infectious energy, the trio delivered a programme that showcased both virtuosity and imagination in equal measure.

Our sincere thanks to Jess, Zeynep and Sam for sharing their musicianship, generosity and inspiration with our pupils and audience. We look forward to welcoming them back to Wells in the future.

Yesterday was the last Going Solo concert of this academic year, and we went out with a bang with ten fantastic performances that showcased the huge amount of talent across the school. Featuring everything from classics by Mozart and Debussy, to a self-penned pop song, it was a fantastic evening of performances and we are very proud of everyone who took part.

What a week for our Prep School musicians.

As well as a fantastic Lunchtime Concert, Cedars Hall played host to the annual Prep School Ensembles Concert, celebrating an incredible range of talent and music-making. Featuring every ensemble in the Prep School, including Strings, Percussion Ensemble, a Piano Trio and two Choirs who performed together for the finale of the concert, every performance was filled with confidence and enthusiasm.

Congratulations to Gabriel K (Year 10) and Leonie Z (Year 12), who spent half term in Regensburg in the final round (Bundeswettbewerb) of the German “Jugend musiziert” competition. Gabriel was awarded full marks and a 1st prize for singing, whilst Leonie was awarded 3rd prize for piano and 3rd prize on drum kit. Congratulations to both pupils who were competing in highly competitive fields.

Of the approximately 1,900 participants across the week-long competition, Gabriel was selected as one of a handful to sing in the Prize Winners’ Concert. This was recorded by Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting) and will be broadcast on the 13th June on BR Klassik’s “On Stage” programme.

Prep School took over Quilter Hall for a wonderful Lunchtime Concert!

Year 6 pupils Charlotte (violin), Olivia (piano) and Isabel (cello), alongside Year 4 violinist Han, performed works by Wieniawski, Bartók, Saint-Saëns and Accolay with confidence, poise, incredible virtuosity and impressive musicianship throughout.

We couldn’t be prouder of these young musicians and the way they represented the Prep School.

Prep School took over Quilter Hall yesterday for a wonderful Lunchtime Concert!

Year 6 pupils Charlotte (violin), Olivia (piano) and Isabel (cello), alongside Year 4 violinist Han, performed works by Wieniawski, Bartók, Saint-Saëns and Accolay with confidence, poise, incredible virtuosity and impressive musicianship throughout.

On Friday 15th May, pupils took part in the termly ‘Friday Night is Symphony Night’ event in Cedars Hall where musicians from across the school get the chance to sight-read through a piece of symphonic repertoire. This time, it was the turn of Mendelssohn’s 3rd Symphony (better known as the ‘Scottish’). After a chance to get to grips with playing the music, a selection of pupils also had a go at conducting excerpts from the symphony and receive feedback. Well done to all involved in getting to grips with a new piece of orchestral repertoire, and in taking on the challenge of having a go at conducting!

A wonderful evening with the incredibly talented Jazz guitarist and composer Martin Taylor as part of the Maestro Series at Cedars Hall.

Alongside a wonderful performance, Martin shared valuable insights with our pupils in the morning masterclass, speaking about the importance of recognising what makes you unique, developing your own voice, and learning to understand where your greatest strengths lie as a musician.

It was a powerful reminder that musical excellence is not about becoming someone else, but about discovering and refining what only you can bring.

Thank you to Martin for an inspiring evening of music, conversation and learning.

Our next Maestro Series event welcomes the brilliant Jess Gillam. While the concert is now sold out, we look forward to sharing highlights from the evening and encourage audiences to keep an eye on future Maestro Series performances as we continue to bring world-class artists to Cedars Hall.
