Look closely at a sheet of Saunders Waterford® and you’ll see the watermark running through the paper.

The watermark is part of the sheet itself, created during the Mould Made papermaking process. It identifies the paper as genuine Saunders Waterford® and gives a small glimpse into the history behind the paper.

Watermarks have been used by papermakers for centuries to identify their papers and where they were made. It’s a tradition that still has a place in Saunders Waterford® today.

Look for it next time you hold a sheet up to the light.

Ambassador Jemma Gunning - Artist was inspired by a special experience to create these monoprints:

“Back in May, I travelled to Svalbard as part of The Arctic Circle Residency, sailing around the archipelago with a group of artists and researchers. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and one that I know will stay with me for a long time.

While I was there, I felt an urgency to draw, to record what I was seeing and respond to a landscape that is changing rapidly and, in many places, being lost.

Since returning home, I’ve been working from those drawings in the studio, using monoprinting as a way of thinking through the experience and beginning to work out where this body of work might go next. The process is experimental and immediate, allowing the drawings to shift and evolve as I explore the memory of the landscape.

In 2024, artists Katy Drake and Kath Van Uytrecht brought ‘Giving Voice’ to the Society of Antiquaries of London (), exploring the overlooked contributions of women to archaeology, history and heritage between 1870–1950.⁠

The project culminated in ‘Illuminating Knowledge ’ - a large-scale screen print reimagining the Society’s Lamp of Knowledge. More than 200 lamps represent women associated with the Society, transforming a single source of knowledge into a network of voices.⁠

Printed at East London Printmakers on Somerset® Tub Sized Satin 410gsm, the print sits alongside five zines and a series of printed objects that continue to spark conversations in the Society’s library.⁠

We’re proud that Somerset® paper forms part of this powerful project, bringing overlooked histories into view through print. ✨⁠

Somerset® printmaking paper comes with four beautiful deckle edges.

There is a quiet beauty in a sheet that has 4 ragged edges. The irregular sides are a reminder that the paper itself is part of the artwork.

At St Cuthberts Mill, two of the edges are created naturally on the cylinder mould machine, while the other two are torn carefully by hand by our skilled finishing team. The result is an exquisite looking sheet.

For printmakers, leaving the deckle edges visible can add texture and individuality to the finished work, particularly when a print is mounted or float-framed.
