Three-day Polishing Masterclass with Stephen M Goldsmith — amazing opportunity! 🩶💛

Join the Heritage Crafts 2025 Precious Metalworker of the Year Stephen M Goldsmith for this three-day intensive training course aimed at intermediate metalworking practitioners, supported by the Goldsmiths' Foundation.

With over 50 years experience in the silversmithing allied trades, Stephen M Goldsmith has a unique affinity for metal, especially gold. He has elevated the endangered craft of polishing beyond recognition and his skills are widely considered unparalleled in the precious metals world.

Taking place at Sappho Rocks Jewellery School in Essex, students will learn the fundamentals and advanced techniques of metal polishing, how to make the most of their bench tools, which materials to use, and how to reclaim precious material from the workshop environment.

This course is not intended as an ‘experience’; it is for working practitioners who intend to incorporate these skills into their metalworking practice. Both masterclasses cover the same areas and each have five places available, providing a focused and supportive learning environment.

To ensure equitable access to this vital training opportunity, we are providing three free bursary places for individuals from under-represented communities or facing financial hardship – subject to availability.

✨ Guru Tip ✨

This is all about polishing direction… watch closely because I’ll only show you once! 👀

I’ve obviously spun things up a bit with .you.copper, but the secret is to cross the spinning lines to achieve an even finish.

I then clean the same mop, mainly because copper is a dirty metal to work with. I don't use the same methods for precious metals as I do for base metals.

To finish base metals, you can use Hyfin or Rouge. And remember—if the mop is too soft, it won’t react in the same way as it does on silver or gold.

Every metal has its own character. The real skill is understanding what the metal is telling you and adapting your polishing to suit it.

As I always say: "It's not just polishing… it's controlled abrasion." ✨

I have been asked twice today about Vienna Lime, you can buy it at all good trade stores such as and it arrives in powder form, just add normal water into a yoghurt paste and apply with a soft brush, you can use with the mini mounted brushes or a Goat's hair brush on the Buffing Machine or even do it by hand, use it wet and it has a Mohs scale of 3 and silver is 3 so it can't scratch silver.
