Our Year 3 pupils have had a wonderful couple of days taking part in their school sleep over experience which finishes today. They walked to Wellington Monument, went on a night walk, sang songs around the camp fire and finished it all off with a trip to Hollywood Bowl. The children were beautifully behaved and a credit to the school when out in public. This experience helps to prepare the children for the longer residentials they will be offered in Year 4 and Year 6. Staying away from home can bring benefits such as promoting independence, building resilience and strengthening relationships between peers and the adults in school. Thank you to our parents for supporting this and for sending the children in so well-prepared, and to our staff team who generously gave up their time to make this experience possible.

Ducks class have had an amazing start to the summer term! We have been doing so much exciting learning but here are a couple of our highlights!
In art, we have been print making. We enjoyed experimenting different types of printing using rolling, finger printing and applying paint with a brush. We then moved onto making our own stamps out of cardboard and then foam.
As scientists, we have been exploring the suitability of different materials. One of our investigations involved us testing which materials are waterproof. We also took part in an investigation where we were seeing why wood is suitable for a garden fence. We tested out its strength, weight and how hard it is. We decided it was perfect for a garden fence because it is strong when connected together, it isn't too heavy so it can be moved around easily when being made and it doesn't mark easily if hit with something.
We are looking forward to all the exciting learning we will get up to in our final half term as Year 1 and 2s.

Year 1 children in Hedgehogs have been exploring! We checked our digital photography skills by applying filters to our photos and taking photos of our friends. We showed our maths knowledge by clearly explaining to our partner how we arrived at the answers. We tested materials for strength, waterproofness and learnt new words: transparent, translucent and opaque. We can't wait to see what we will be learning about next half term!

To deepen our understanding of the world, we have been comparing life in the UK to life in Kenya. We have learnt about many similarities, such as a national love of sport, as well as many differences such as the language and the types of wild animals.

We spent a few days preparing to go on safari by making binoculars (practising our joining skills), animal masks (practising our snipping skills) and constructing a jeep (working as a team and problem solving). Finally, we were ready! We all had roles - either driver, tour operator, tourist or animal. We booked our tickets with the tour operator, spoke about what animals we wanted to see (most of us wanted to catch a glimpse of the famous Big Five) and off we went. We saw giraffes nibbling on the grass, a pride of lions sheltering in the shade, a meerkat on a hilltop and many more. We can't wait to return to Kenya!

Pay-to-Play was a huge success last Friday. After a term of preparing, planning and resourcing, it was finally Pay-to-Play! There were a range of events including, penalty shoot-out, face painting, soak the student, lucky dips, guess the name of the teddy and much more.
This annual event is linked to the PSHE and Civic Award work which focuses on giving something back to the school community. This is a great fund raising event and it is always wonderful to see all the children having fun!

The Year 6s worked so hard and showed such amazing perseverance, resilience and work ethic in completing their SATs tests last week.
The children were smiling, happy and taking it all in their stride knowing that all the hard work they had put in over the last 6 months was about to pay off and that they were going to get the chance to show how brilliant they were.
The week culminated in bacon and sausage baps for everyone! A massive thank you to Aldi in Taunton for providing all the food as part of their school's program.

Seals class have had a fantastic start to the summer term! As usual, we have been incredibly busy doing lots of exciting learning.

In art, we have been print making. We enjoyed experimenting different types of printing using rolling, finger printing and applying paint with a brush. We then moved onto making our own stamps which we enjoyed using.

As scientists, we have been exploring the suitability of different materials. One of our investigations involved us testing which materials are waterproof. In order to make our investigation fair we measured 4mm of water using a syringe.

Otters, Foxes and Robins have had a busy week exploring areas of Wellington for their science and history topics. They started the week with a visit to Wellington Park, to support their science learning, where they looked at plants and identified the different types of stems and leaves. The week ended with a visit to St John's Church, for their history learning, where the children saw the monument which was built for Sir John Popham and discovered how he was connected to Wellington.

Not long to go! Our annual EYFS Plant Sale takes place after school on Thursday and Friday this week! The Reception children have been carefully tending their young seedlings and we'll have a variety of indoor plants, flowers, fruit and veg available. Donations of plants are still being gratefully accepted (donations can be dropped into Hedgehogs or Dormice class).

Please remember to bring some coins with you, as we can't take card payments. The plant sale is happening on the big playground, outside Hedgehogs class (nearest Bouncy Bears).
See you there!

A huge 'thank you' to Waitrose for donating £800 to our school! We are big on enrichment at Beech Grove – this money will help us to continue to provide inspirational and exciting visits, visitors and experiences for our pupils.

The Reception children have been learning about plants and how they grow. They have sowed a lot of seeds and are now looking after them to make sure they grow in time for their annual EYFS plant sale on Thursday 25th and Friday 26th April.
Please come along and support their plant sale; all monies raised will be used to fund some outdoor equipment and contribute to the cost of the Reception children's first school trip in the summer.
We would also gratefully accept donations of plants (indoor and outdoor), vegetables and flowers.
Thank you for your support!

Thank you so much for joining us at our Easter concert this morning. It was a wonderful showcase of the children’s musical skills as well as an opportunity to remember the significance and story of Easter.

Thank you to all of our families for your incredible support this term. On behalf of everyone at Beech Grove, we wish you a happy and healthy Easter break.

We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday 15th April. Thank you 😊

Do you have a keyboard at home which you no longer use or need?
We would be extremely grateful to receive donations of any keyboards, which are no longer required :)

Foxes have had a lovely half term; the highlight, celebrating World Book Day. The children loved dressing up or wearing comfortable clothes, making animal origami bookmarks and it was so lovely to see them being kind, caring and supportive during shared reading with our EYFS and Year 1 students. We had a visit from Archie the scarecrow (from The Archie Project), who shared a story with the Year 3 and 4 children and kindly gave each child a book to take home or read in school.

Throughout this term we have thoroughly enjoyed our writing and geography topics, both of which culminated in the production of excellent leaflets which the children are very proud of, so please feel free to pop in an have a look at their work.

Badgers had a surprise visit from the tiniest badger, Mr Hibberd’s daughter Ruby, on Red Nose Day!; the children loved reading stories to her.
World Book Day was also a great success as the class read to children from Otters class, as well as dressing up.

Ducks have had another busy half term and we have really enjoyed our learning.

As artists, we have been exploring oil pastels. We have learnt different techniques like blending and cross-hatching. More recently we have looked at an artist called Jean Michel Basquiat who uses oil pastels to create a bright and bold background before he uses black to draw over the top to create a character. He liked to listen to music when he worked so we listened to 3 different types of music to create our bright backgrounds.

In religious education we have been learning about the Easter story. We have been discussing Palm Sunday and why Jesus was welcomed like a King or celebrity. We then re-enacted the events of Palm Sunday.

We loved it on World Book Day when we were able to share stories with the older children. We also enjoyed being a character from our favourite book or dressing in our comfortable clothes to read in. Miss Guarraci said she wished she could come in her oodie and slippers every day!

We have also been lucky enough to have two visitors come in and read to us in a different way. The first one was Mrs Ellis who read a book to us in German and this week we had Mrs Pitchers come in to read to us along side using 'Makaton' which is where signs and symbols are used to help communicate.

Kestrels class have enjoyed some practical activities, this half term, to further our understanding of some important scientific concepts relating to space. We produced explanations of why we get day and night, to present on a children's TV show. Also, we learnt about how craters are formed and carried out a fair test to investigate them.

Congratulations to our pupils who took part in the RockSteady concert on Friday morning; parents, staff and pupils were wowed by their fantastic performances!

Our school needs your help...

Do you work for an organisation that offers match funding?

Match funding is an easy way that companies can meet their corporate social responsibilities by supporting schools' fundraising. Many companies, particularly banks, supermarkets, and energy companies offer match funding schemes.

We would be extremely grateful if all parents/carers and relatives could please check with their workplace to see if they already have a scheme. If they don't already have a scheme, why not ask them to introduce one?

If we can generate additional funds through this scheme it would make a huge difference to the enrichment opportunities available to the children at Beech Grove.

Maybe your employer could pledge some time or resources to support the school in addition to or instead of match funding.

If you think you can help us, please contact the school office and we will pass your details on to our PTA (Friends of Beech Grove).
