🌞🌑 Make your own solar eclipse viewer! 🌑🌞

With the solar eclipse taking place tomorrow, why not turn it into a little science project at home by helping your child make their own box pinhole projector? 🔭✨

You will need:
📦 A cardboard box – a cereal or shoe box works well
📄 A piece of white paper
🥫 Aluminium foil
📌 A pin or drawing pin
✂️ Scissors
🧻 Sticky tape

How to make it:

1️⃣ Make your screen
Cut a piece of white paper to fit the inside of one end of your box and tape it in place. This is where the image of the Sun will appear.

2️⃣ Prepare the other end
At the opposite end of the box, cut two small openings – one for the foil and one for you to look through.

3️⃣ Add the foil
Cover one of the openings completely with a small piece of aluminium foil and tape it securely around the edges.

4️⃣ Make the pinhole
Very carefully, use a pin to make one tiny, neat hole in the centre of the foil.

5️⃣ Take it outside
Stand with your back towards the Sun. Hold the box so that sunlight shines through the tiny hole in the foil.

6️⃣ Look inside the box – not at the Sun! 👀
Look through the second opening towards the white paper. Move the box gently until you can see a small image of the Sun projected onto the paper.

As the eclipse progresses, you should be able to watch the Moon gradually move across the projected image of the Sun. How amazing is that? 🌞➡️🌙

⚠️ VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY MESSAGE ⚠️

Children should complete this activity with an adult.

🚫 Never look directly at the Sun.
🚫 Never look at the Sun through the pinhole.
🚫 Ordinary sunglasses are not safe for looking at the Sun.
🚫 Do not use binoculars, cameras or telescopes to look at the Sun unless specialist solar filters have been correctly fitted.

The box works because you are looking at a projection of the Sun, rather than looking at the Sun itself.

From today and throughout August, children aged 5 to 15 can travel free on all Travel Telford, Arriva and On-demand buses.
