πŸ“±πŸ‘Ά Screen Time and Little Minds πŸ‘ΆπŸ“±

As part of supporting children's healthy development, we wanted to share the latest guidance from Best Start in Life on screen time for under 5s.

The guidance highlights the importance of balancing screen use with the activities that help young children learn and thrive, such as playing, exploring, chatting, reading stories, and spending quality time with family and friends. Research shows that 90% of brain development happens before the age of 5, making these early experiences incredibly important.

Every family is different, and screens are a part of modern life. The guidance offers practical tips to help families build healthy screen habits, including choosing age-appropriate content, enjoying screens together where possible, and making time for plenty of active play and conversation.

You can read the full guidance here:

The Robins had lots of fun making their very own 2-ingredient, sugar-free banana ice cream!

The children counted out 6 bananas and took turns peeling them before using forks to mash them up. They then added some lemon juice, taking time to smell it and talk about what they noticed before mixing it all together.

There was lots of excitement as the children discussed what needed to happen next to turn their mixture into ice cream. They decided it would need to go into the freezer to get nice and cold!

The activity helped to develop counting skills, communication, and fine motor control, while also encouraging the children to explore different smells, textures, and changes in ingredients.

When it was finally ready to taste, it was a big success and thoroughly enjoyed by the Robins. πŸ˜‹πŸ¦

A simple, healthy treat with no added sugarβ€”and even more special because the children made it themselves! ✨

πŸ’™ Father's Day Stay and Play πŸ’™

We had a fantastic time celebrating Father's Day with our special Stay and Play session!

The children loved spending quality time with their daddies. Everyone enjoyed delicious sausage sandwiches and fresh fruit while chatting and making special memories together.

There were plenty of fun activities to enjoy, including football games, creative Father's Day crafts, water play, and lots of messy fun with crazy foam and dinosaurs! πŸ¦•βš½πŸŽ¨πŸ’¦ A particular favourite was sitting together in the shade, sharing stories and enjoying some quiet reading time.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the morning so special. It was wonderful to see so many smiles, laughter, and precious moments shared between the children and their loved ones.

We would like to wish all our amazing dads and father figures a very Happy Father's Day on Sunday! πŸ’™

The children have been loving all the excitement of the World Cup and have been proudly supporting England every step of the way! ⚽🏴

We were so excited to celebrate England's fantastic win yesterday in their first match, and the children have been talking all about the match. Their enthusiasm has inspired us to get outside and practice our own football skills, including dribbling, passing, shooting, and teamwork.

It's been wonderful to see the children developing their confidence, coordination, and sportsmanship while having lots of fun together. We can't wait to keep cheering on England and following their journey through the tournament!

Come on England! πŸ†βš½β€οΈ

πŸ“ Starting Your Weaning Journey* πŸ“

Weaning is an exciting milestone (and yes, sometimes a messy one too!) as your baby begins exploring solid foods alongside their usual breast milk or formula.

In the UK, weaning is usually recommended from around 6 months of age, when your baby can:
βœ”οΈ Sit upright with support
βœ”οΈ Hold their head steady and control their neck movements
βœ”οΈ Show an interest in food and what others are eating

First Foods to Try

Keep things simple to begin with by offering soft, easy-to-eat foods. Whether you choose smooth purΓ©es, mashed foods, or soft finger foods, the most important thing is finding what works best for you and your little one.

Some great starter foods include:
πŸ₯• Soft-cooked vegetables such as carrot, sweet potato, broccoli, and parsnip
🍌 Soft fruits including banana, pear, apple, and avocado
πŸ₯£ Baby rice or porridge mixed with breast milk or formula
🍲 Lentils, beans, and well-cooked meat or fish (mashed or blended)

Introduce new foods one at a time and avoid adding salt or sugar. Always supervise your baby during mealtimes.

Helpful Weaning Essentials

You don't need lots of special equipment, but these items can make mealtimes a little easier:
β€’ A supportive high chair
β€’ Soft-tipped baby spoons
β€’ Small bowls or plates
β€’ Bibs (and perhaps a splash mat for the floor!)
β€’ An open cup or sippy cup for offering water

The children in our Blackbirds and Owls rooms have been developing their independence by learning how to put on their own coats.

Using the "coat flip" method, the children placed their coats on the floor with the hood or collar nearest to their feet, slipped their arms into the sleeves, and flipped the coat over their heads. This simple technique helps children build confidence, coordination, problem-solving skills, and independence in their daily routines.

There were lots of proud smiles and a real sense of achievement as the children persevered and successfully put on their coats by themselves. We are so proud of their determination and willingness to keep trying.

πŸ’‘ Why not give it a go at home? Practising the coat flip method at home is a great way to encourage independence and help your child gain confidence in dressing themselves. With a little practice and lots of praise, they'll soon be putting on their coat all by themselves!

Well done, Blackbirds and Owls! 🌟

What a fantastic Balance Bike session we had on Monday! πŸš΄β€β™€οΈβœ¨

The children had so much fun learning all about balance through a range of playful games and activities. We practised core skills like coordination, control, and stability in a way that kept everyone smiling and engaged.

Before hopping onto the bikes, we talked about the importance of staying safe and learnt how to properly wear a helmet ⛑️—the children did a great job helping each other check they were on correctly!

Then came the highlight… time to ride! The children showed amazing confidence as they took turns on the balance bikes, building their skills and cheering each other on.

It was wonderful to see their determination, growing independence, and big proud smiles. Well done everyone! 🌟
