At Grassroots we often discuss the fine line between interaction and interference - often adults joining in stops the deeper play imagination and exploration. That’s why an enabling environment is so important. How we provide provocation for play and are available to scaffold, support and encourage. The rest is best left to a child; to be a child with time, not time constraints, with awe of the world around them, not awesome activities, and especially whilst they’re developing their brains at the fastest rate in life… isn’t it only right we allow them the freedom to do this in its most powerful form - through self directed play and become who they choose to be?
Think back to when you were a child. Where do you remember? I bet it wasn’t the most expensive family trip or with the latest toy to hit the high street. More likely pushing cars across your grandmas patterned carpet (that made the perfect roads) or finding treasure to put in the den you’d made at the bottom of the garden. I’ve given away two of my early memories but I’m fortunate to have had those freedoms, and 40 years later I still feel very comfortable in my own company, love being creative and am never bored. ☺️
