Really sad to hear about the passing of David Hockney yesterday. In amongst the many tributes was this quote of his which speaks volumes, not only about his own life and work but also about ours.

Whether it’s ten minutes before bed, the same book on repeat, or a bleary-eyed story with dodgy accents – what really matters is showing your child that words matter. That they matter.

You’re not just reading a book. You’re building confidence. Vocabulary. Imagination. A lifelong love of learning.

And it’s never too late to start. Do you agree?

If you want your child to sit still, at a desk for 6 hours a day. Ask your typical questions. If you want your child to move, learn through play, doing, active learning, developmentally appropriate practice. Ask these 👇🏼 1. “How do children access resources independently throughout the day?” 2. “What opportunities do you provide for movement, exploration and hands-on learning through play?” 3. “How do you ensure activities are developmentally appropriate for 5, 6 and 7 year olds rather than focused on long periods of sitting?” 4. “Can you show me how areas within the classroom are planned to support current learning?” And perhaps the most important, because most schools have brilliant reception and then it drops off a cliff as they enter Year 1…. 5. “Is what I see in Early Years extended into KS1 as research shows play based learning is critical until age 8?” If they say no. Ask why. Then run a mile 🚩 😂 👉🏼 What else would you ask? Let me tell you why it’s important as parents we start asking these questions. Because a) we want our children to learn how research shows is best but b) if we all start asking these questions schools will start to reflect, the notion for change starts - think supply vs demand. Let’s demand what we know our children need. We’re working on parliament and we will work on the schools on the ground too.
