Once you have a Premises Licence and you intend to have live or recorded music at the premises you will also need The Music Licence.
This licence covers songwriter and recording royalties for both live cover bands and background music.

Your premises licence is the council document that approves the licensing activities e.g. sale of alcohol, regulated entertainment and late-night refreshment. All Premises Licences are individual to your premises offer. Your music royalty licence (The Music Licence) pays songwriters and record labels when you play their music at your premises.

The Live Music Act removed the licensing requirements for live music and recorded music where you have a premises licence or club premises certificate in place permitting ‘on sales’ of alcohol, you are open for the sale or supply of alcohol for consumption on the premises and live or recorded music is taking place between 8am and 11pm. If the music is amplified live music or recorded music (e.g. DJs or a disco for example), the audience must be no more than 500. You still require The Music Licence.
