Today our preschoolers went on a little adventure… all the way to Canada! ✈️🌎
As part of our Understanding the World learning, the children explored Canadian culture through a day full of fun red and white activities. We learned that people in Canada speak English and French, and the children were brilliant at picking up some new French words too:
👋 Hello – Bonjour
🙏 Please – S’il te plaît
😊 Thank you – Merci
👋 Goodbye – Au revoir
We also discovered the iconic maple leaf and the beautiful Canadian flag. The children created their own flags and decorated salt dough maple leaf ornaments using red and white paint and cotton buds — a perfect way to build fine motor skills while getting creative! 🎨🍁
It was wonderful to see how engaged the children were in learning about a different country and culture. They had so much fun recalling their new French words during group time — très bien, preschoolers! 🌟

Today some children had the opportunity to go on the mini bus to Portsmouth Museum and Art Gallery.

The children were able to walk through Portsmouth’s heritage, discover the world of Sherlock Holmes, see fascinating works of art and trace the history of Portsmouth FC. Throughout this experience the children spoke about what they can see and hear. Some children started talking about their experiences with football as we walked through the Portsmouth football room and even had a go on the football table.

There were opportunities for the children to dress up into clothes which were worn from years ago, the children tried putting the clothes on themselves, encouraging independence. There were lots to see and talk about and I believe this is a good learning experience for them.

🪏 Gardening 🫜

In the baby room, we have recently planted some vegetables with Mark. Since this we have been making sure to look after them so they can grow fully, this means we have to water them often!

The children have done so well watering the vegetable patch today with Donna, especially with the sunshine today☀️

Happy world down syndrome day everyone!

We just wanted to take the opportunity to say a massive thankyou to everyone for their donations towards Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association. We have been busy celebrating and i know the children have enjoyed taking part in all activities! So far we have raised an amazing £183!!!

To finish this exciting week, we wanted to share some parent testimonials from our children across the settings who are currently being supported by the charity. They wanted to express the impact they have made on their children and themselves as a family and we thought it would be lovely to share with you all.

British science week!

This week is British Science Week, and Elderberries have taking part in lots of science activities!
The theme this year is 'change and adaption', we spoke about different animals who change when in different environments such as chameleons, and explored reasons why this may be!

We all explored why animals may look the way they do and how it may help the environment they are in such as scales in the water and fluffy fur when living outside, to keep warm.

This then turned into us making our own animals and talking about why they have the properties they do, such as smaller ears to hear less noise (if they're in a loud environment), or a mermaid tale to swim in the sea. This was a very fun activity and the children used the knowledge about animals they know to create new animals.

We have had a fantastic time celebrating World Book Day today!

We have loved seeing everyone's costumes and sharing stories together. Discussing which characters we have come as and reenacting favourite parts from the storylines. We tried our hand at making our own story books, making our own book marks and experiencing story related sensory trays.

We will be celebrating World Book Day tomorrow!

During the week staff members and children have been dressing up as their favourite book characters. We would love to see children and staff bring in books that have inspired their costumes! These can then be read and enjoyed during our small group times throughout the day.

Lehann, our very talented chef, has created a book themed menu for the children to enjoy!

The raspberries went to the library today! 📙

This morning our Raspberry room had a very fun trip to the library, the children were very excited about this and were super excited to go in the mini bus! First of all the children put their highvis on ready for their trip, they then held an adults hand and walked to the mini bus. The children walked very well, they then got in the mini bus. While in the mini bus we spoke about what we could see and hear! We saw lots of houses and cars! 🏡

When we parked up, the children got out of the mini bus and we walked to the library. We spoke about using our quiet voices in the library and each child listened brilliantly to these instructions.
We then walked up the stairs into the childrens area which we were greated by the lovely people from the library. We then all sat down on the carpet and got ready to listened to the stories and sing nursery rhymes. We had 2 stories read to the children and then we also did an action song called 'Wiggly Woo'. Also, we spoke about the animals that were shown to us and we copied the actions that they do (frog, beetle)
It really was a brilliant trip, and we are so proud of all of our children who did great listening and followed all instructions. We can not wait to go again!

🐍 Chinese New Year 🐍

Today in the baby room the children have had lots of fun exploring a range of Chinese New year themed activities. This year is the year of the snake so a lot of the activities have been based on this!

The blueberries and strawberries took part in some snake painting, water play and spaghetti play. The babies used their fine motor skills to spread the paint as well as using their fingers tips to paint the snakes body. We also practised our scooping and pouring skills with the water. We had some picture visuals of important things that they use to help celebrate Chinese new year.

We then sat down for a yummy lunch of sweet and sour chicken with noodles. The babies really enjoyed this lunch! The babies again used their fine motor skills to use their cutlery.

We have had such a fun filled day ☺️

Elderberries had a great opportunity to travel to Staunton Park to celebrate the Big Garden Bird Watch🐦🐧🦆🦢. Before getting on the mini bus we looked at pictures of different birds we may see at Staunton Park. Once we arrived at Staunton Park and before crossing the road, we looked around to see if it was safe for us to cross. This was an opportunity to remind children about road safety and looking out for cars and signs before we cross.

We walked around Staunton Park, staying close to each other in a group and the children looked around to see if they could find any birds. This was a great opportunity for the children to show understanding of the world. We found different kind of birds such as ducks, swans, blackbird and even a Robin which we couldn't get a picture of as it flew off to quickly. ☺️. The children also had an opportunity to look through the binoculars and see if they could spot any birds.

Throughout this trip the children used gross motor movements to walk and skip around the park, recalled moments they had with family members when they went on walks and spotted birds as well as connecting with nature and animals. All of this falls under the Mulberry bush curriculum. Elderberries had a great day out and it was a bonding experience.

Let’s Talk Tantrums 🌟

Tantrums are a normal part of toddler life—they’re how young children communicate big emotions when they can’t find the words. It’s their way of saying:

"I’m overwhelmed."
"I don’t understand."
"I can’t manage this."
Your little one might shout, cry, kick, or even bite. While this can feel stressful, it’s important to remember that tantrums are a natural part of development as their brains grow and they learn to control impulses.

How to Handle Tantrums
💬 Acknowledge Their Feelings
Let them know you understand:
“It looks like you’re feeling upset or frustrated.”

🤔 Identify the Cause
Are they hungry, tired, or disappointed? Try saying:
“You were really excited to play with that toy, weren’t you?”

✨ Offer Comfort or Distraction

A cuddle or calming words can help them feel secure.
Redirect their attention to something fun, like a book or a new activity.
🤝 Stay Calm and Reassure
Use a calm voice, even if it’s hard to do. Your calmness helps them feel safe and models how to manage emotions.
