Your First Junctions Explained! MSPSL & Mini Roundabouts | Episode 2

Thank you for joining us for Episode 2 of our “Learn to Drive with Zairai – From Zero to Pass” Series!

In today’s episode, Zairai and Zwaak continue their driving journey by learning how to approach and turn left and right at junctions.
This lesson was recorded in the Arbury area of Cambridge, on 20 mph roads. You’ll see different types of junctions, including both open and closed junctions, and learn how to deal with them safely and confidently.

We also introduce one of the most important routines for approaching junctions: MSPSL:

M – Mirrors: Check what is happening around you.
S – Signal: Indicate when necessary.
P – Position: Choose the correct road position.
S – Speed: Adjust your speed appropriately.
L – Look: Make proper observations before moving.

As a natural progression, we then introduce mini roundabouts. Before you can confidently deal with them, you need to understand three important things:

How to identify a mini roundabout-What the purpose of a mini roundabout is
Who has priority when approaching one

Bury St Edmunds Driving TC | First Time Here? Watch This Before Your Test

Hello everyone and thank you once again for joining us on our channel. We've been making the most of the glorious weather recently by getting out and recording more driving lessons, and we're delighted to share another one with you today.

This episode is a little different from our usual Cambridge-based content. Instead, we're heading to Bury St Edmunds Driving Test Centre.

We've met many learners who were unable to find a practical driving test in Cambridge and chose to book the earliest available appointment in Bury St Edmunds instead. At less than an hour's drive from Cambridge, it's a popular alternative, and for many people, getting an earlier test date takes priority over the location. That's entirely understandable.

However, one piece of feedback we hear time and time again is that unfamiliar roads can make a real difference. Even candidates who were assessed as test-ready in Cambridge have found themselves caught out by the lack of local knowledge. We've even worked with experienced drivers who had driven abroad for many years and regularly drove in the UK, yet still found the first few minutes of their test more demanding than they expected simply because they didn't know the area.

With that in mind, today's video is a humble attempt to help anyone who has never driven in Bury St Edmunds before or is travelling there for their practical test. Please note there is no exclusive car park for test candidates. Bury’s car park is shared with members of the public, so it's a great opportunity to understand what you might encounter when your test just begins.

Our hope is that by showing you the layout, the roads and some of the common roads, we can take a little of the pressure off on test day and help you arrive feeling calmer and more confident.

Manual Lesson Through Arbury, Ring-Road, Victoria Road & Histon

Welcome to all our subscribers and a very warm welcome to everyone joining us for the first time.

Today we're delighted to share another episode in our "Do It Like Zairai" series. This lesson was recorded in our manual tuition car, a Volkswagen Golf Black Edition, and, as usual, we begin from Brookmount Court, home of the Cambridge Driving Test Centre.

Our journey starts by turning left onto Kings Hedges Road, followed by another left turn into Northfield Avenue, where we negotiate a 20 mph zone with several mini roundabouts. At the end of the road, we turn right onto Campkin Road, then right again into Arbury Road, before turning left into Mere’s Way. Here, we highlight one of the area's common driving challenges – the faded road markings at a mini roundabout, where you'll normally be expected to take the first exit straight ahead. This road also features several bulky speed humps, so remember to reduce your speed smoothly as you approach them and then build your speed back up gently once you've cleared each one safely.
At the traffic light-controlled junction, we turn left onto Gilbert Road, where the speed limit increases to 30 mph. At the end of the road, we turn right and continue towards Cambridge's one-way system. Here, we'll show you how to turn right into Alpha Road, a narrow residential street well known for too many parked cars. Even if your side of the road appears clear, always be prepared for oncoming traffic. In this lesson, we encounter a good example where an approaching driver was coming too fast, demonstrating the importance of reading the road ahead.
At the end of Alpha Road, we turn right before turning left onto Victoria Road. Although there are no dedicated cycle lanes here, cyclists are extremely common, so maintaining good observation and planning well ahead is essential.
We then move on to an Independent Driving section by following the satnav. The satnav directs us to do a sharp right turn from Victoria Road onto Histon Road. Thanks to the green filter arrow, we don't need to give way while making the turn. However, immediately afterwards there's another give-way point where careful observations are essential before continuing.
The speed limit on Histon Road changes from 20 mph to 30 mph as we continue towards Histon Village via Histon Roundabout. We approach the roundabout in the left-hand lane, following the road markings for the B1049. After leaving the roundabout, although the speed limit increases to 40 mph, don't rush to accelerate. Instead, anticipate the traffic lights ahead before making steady progress over the bridge. The next speed limit sign is partially concealed by bushes, making it easy to miss if you're not paying attention.
At the pedestrian crossing, we turn right and then follow the road as it bends left before following signs towards Cottenham. This route contains several speed limit changes, including 20 mph, 30 mph and back to 20 mph. The road may appear almost identical throughout, so don't judge the speed limit by the appearance of the road alone, always look out for the signs.
Eventually, we turn left to return through Histon Village towards Cambridge. Along the way, we discuss the importance of choosing an appropriate speed whenever visibility is restricted or the road bends sharply.
Finally, we return to the Cambridge Driving Test Centre via Histon Roundabout, taking the second exit towards the city before turning left onto Kings Hedges Road.

Although this episode doesn't include any manoeuvres, it covers a wide variety of challenging situations that regularly catch learners out during their practical driving test. We hope these real driving examples help you improve your planning, observations and decision-making, giving you greater confidence for your own driving test.

The Cambridge Driving Test Route Every Learner Should Practise

Welcome back to another episode of the Do It Like Zairai series. In today's video, we'll take you through another potential practical driving test route starting from the Cambridge Driving Test Centre at Brookmount Court.

As you leave the test centre car park, you'll turn right onto Kings Hedges Road and later turning left at the traffic lights onto Milton Road. Once you’ve are on Milton Road, pay attention here, as the left-hand lane is reserved for buses for some part of the road. Depending on the route your examiner chooses, you'll need to plan ahead and move safely into the left-hand lane once the bus lane ends when you're continuing towards Milton Roundabout and was asked to take 1st or 2nd Exit.

At Milton Roundabout, we'll take the second exit towards Ely /A10. After leaving the roundabout, you'll be driving on a single carriageway with a 50 mph speed limit.
The next instruction may be to turn left off the A10. Good MSPSL routine is essential here, so make sure you plan early, signal in good time and let other road users know exactly what you're intending to do. Once you leave the main road, the road becomes narrower, bendier and much bumpier. Although the speed limit remains 50 mph, that doesn't mean it's always safe to travel at that speed. Always drive to the conditions and what you can see ahead. Remember, the speed limit is a limit, not a target.

After demonstrating a pull-up on the left, you may be asked to turn left and then right into a small car park, where we'll demonstrate a reverse bay park. Once the manoeuvre is complete, take extra care when leaving the car park, as the road leading back to the main road is very narrow.
At the next uncontrolled crossroads, if you're instructed to continue straight ahead, take your time. Visibility to the left is restricted, so make sure you give way to any oncoming traffic before committing to the junction.
At the end of the road, you'll turn left and rejoin the A10 towards Ely. Keep an eye on the road signs and be ready for further directions. In this episode, we demonstrate turning right at the traffic lights towards Waterbeach.

After driving through Waterbeach, you'll rejoin the A10, this time travelling back towards Cambridge. There are several ways back to the city, but in this video we'll take the left turn from A10 into Milton Village.
This section includes a rather obscure giveway junction where many learners fail to slow down or stop when necessary because they simply miss both giveway signs. Stay alert and always assess whether it's safe to continue.

After a short drive through Milton Village, you'll return towards Cambridge via the Milton spiral roundabout. As you approach the roundabout from the village, remember to choose the correct lane before entering and take a safe gap in the traffic.
In this video, we're going straight ahead back to Cambridge, so we'll approach in the left-hand lane. After the last set of traffic lights inside of the roundabout that lane splits into two, and we'll continue in the middle lane towards Milton Road.

After passing several sets of traffic lights, where good anticipation and forward planning are essential, we'll turn right onto Kings Hedges Road, which takes us back to the Cambridge Driving Test Centre.

As always, watch out for parked vehicles, side roads, pedestrians and changing traffic conditions right to the very end of your test.

In today's lesson, Mr Safi, with the kind permission of his learner driver, Amit, recorded part of a real driving lesson in a manual car. Our aim is to give you an honest insight into what happens during a typical lesson, highlighting both the strengths and the areas that still need a little more practice. Watching real lessons can be incredibly beneficial, as many learner drivers experience similar challenges and can learn from common mistakes.

Overall, Amit completed a very good drive and demonstrated plenty of safe driving habits throughout the lesson. However, as with every learner, there were a few areas that required further attention. These included smoother and more accurate steering, making better use of mirrors at the appropriate times, and improving observation and awareness of road markings. These are all common issues that can easily make the difference between passing and failing a driving test, so we'll explain each one as we go through the lesson and show you how to deal with them correctly.

Independent Driving on a REAL Cambridge Test Route | Follow the Signs Like a Pro

In today's video, we're sharing footage from a real driving lesson with a learner who is preparing for her practical driving test and has already covered most of the driving syllabus.

We've received lots of requests to show the independent driving section of the practical test, so that's exactly what this episode is all about.

During your driving test, the independent driving section can be completed either by following a sat-nav or by following road signs. In this lesson, our learner is following road signs, just as you may be asked to do on your own test.
We begin at the Cambridge Driving Test Centre, turning left onto Kings Hedges Road. The learner is initially asked to follow signs for City. She plans her left turn correctly at the end of the road and later being instructed to ignore the signs for the city and turn right at the next junction. This road becomes quite bendy with many parked up cars on the left, and the speed limit is 20 mph, so good speed control is important.

A little further on, the learner is asked to pull up safely on the left before moving away again. Shortly afterwards, she reaches a traffic light-controlled crossroad where she's instructed to turn right. Although the traffic lights are green, an oncoming vehicle is travelling straight ahead. She correctly gives way before completing the turn safely.

The lesson continues along Histon Road, where the speed limit changes from 30 mph to 20 mph. The learner is then asked to make a sharp left turn into Victoria Road.
At the end of Victoria Road there's a zebra crossing followed immediately by a giveway junction. The learner positions the car correctly and follows the one-way system using the right-hand lane. After the pedestrian crossing, the lane divides into two, and she's asked to continue left onto Chesterton Road.
Next, she follows signs to Ely, taking the first exit at Chesterton Roundabout before later taking the third exit from Elizabeth Way Road onto Milton Road.
As we continue along Milton Road, you'll notice the bus lane on the left. Since we're travelling straight ahead at the next junction, the learner safely moves into the left-hand lane once it is safe to do so. Shortly afterwards, the bus lane begins again, so she correctly stays out of it until it finishes before moving back into the left-hand lane ready for Milton Roundabout, where she takes the 2nd exit towards Ely/A10 before being asked to follow signs for Histon by turning left off the A10 at the second set of traffic lights.
The route then continues along countryside roads, where the learner demonstrates good progress while remembering that the speed limit is a limit, not a target. Country roads require you to adjust your speed according to visibility, bends and approaching hazards.
After several bends, she's asked to turn left into New Road in Histon. Here we demonstrate the pull up on the right manoeuvre. The learner patiently waits for a cyclist to pass before stopping safely on the right-hand side. She then reverses approximately two car lengths with good all-round observation before rejoining the correct lane safely.
At the end of the road, the speed limit changes from 40 mph to 30 mph. At this time of year, some of the speed limit signs are partially hidden by trees. Don't panic if this happens during your driving test. If a sign is genuinely obscured, the examiner will provide appropriate guidance.
Approaching Histon spiral roundabout, the learner follows signs for Cambridge, taking the second exit straight ahead. Soon afterwards, she's given another direction: first left to Kings Hedges then immediately right into Howgate Road. This right turn requires extra care because the road markings of central reservation are badly faded.
Approaching the Y-shaped roundabout, she takes the first exit to the left before dealing with several traffic-calming features, including narrow priority sections. Although her side of the road isn't obstructed, she correctly slows down to allow an oncoming vehicle that is already committed to passing parked cars to continue safely.
Finally, the learner turns left at the first set of traffic lights and right at the second set, bringing the lesson back to the Cambridge Driving Test Centre.
