CONFIDENCE STARTS WITHIN.
Yesterday I was talking to one of my students.
She wanted to see a photo of herself doing a kick — but asked if we could remove her face.
I asked why.
She said, “I don't like looking at myself.”
That stuck with me.
Because I get it.
I have dark bags under my eyes.
A big nose, complete with blackheads 😂
A double chin.
A gap between my front teeth you could probably fit a 50p through.
One tooth is false after I smashed it as a teenager.
My left eye sometimes has a mind of its own.
I talk too fast.
And sometimes I get a twitch in my face.
I was bullied as a teenager for a face like a pepperoni pizza.
But as I've got older, I've realised something:
What can anyone say about me that I haven't already said to myself?
We are often our own worst critics.
Confidence isn't looking in the mirror and thinking you're perfect.
It's knowing you're NOT perfect — and being okay with that.
This is my face.
This is my body.
It's what God gave me.
And do I care what you look like?
No.
I care if you're kind. If you try. If you get back up. If you stand up for yourself and others. If you're becoming a good human being.
That's something I want every student at Blue Wave Taekwondo to understand.
We'll teach you to kick and punch.
But more importantly, I want you to learn to stand tall, stop apologising for who you are and be proud of the person you're becoming.
Because real confidence doesn't start with what you see in the mirror.
It starts within. 🥋
