Stepping Stones Nursery and Pre-school Claverdon

As the summer term gallops by, so too have our much-loved hobby horses, who have been thoroughly exercised in the garden, leaping over homemade jumps fashioned from milk crates and planks, and racing enthusiastically around every corner. Nearby, our busy builders have been hard at work too, constructing walls, stables, and cosy bedding for their four-legged friends, showing wonderful teamwork, imagination and problem-solving along the way.

As we step into April, both staff and children are full of the anticipation, curiosity and quiet wonder that spring so generously brings. Across our setting, learning has been lively, playful and purposeful, with children exploring, questioning and discovering through hands-on experiences, just as the Early Years Foundation Stage encourages. Spring has certainly stolen the spotlight.

Our Pre-Schoolers enjoyed building their ‘picnic campfire,’ using milk crates for chairs as they chatted and toasted "jumbo marshmallows." They enclosed their ‘camp’ while developing early maths and construction skills by overlapping bricks and hammering them down to create a sturdy wall. A tricky concept that supports problem-solving, spatial awareness and perseverance—and one they’ve clearly discovered and mastered!

Inspired by 'Oliver’s Vegetables' our children planted, dug, tasted, pretended and talked their way through Harvest as they scraped and scooped bright pumpkins and ghauds, exploring the cool, stringy flesh and delighting in the smooth green seeds hidden inside. We also explored floating and sinking, watching food colouring dance through oil and water as the children experimented, predicted and giggled at the magical, swirling colours.
